Isn't it to stop you from clouting your knees when you get in and out of the car? as when you turn the wheel to either side, the bottom corners will become closer to your knees.

Ref VW Floor pan, if you look at the concept and design of the MK5/Octy 2 rear suspension its quite obvious they nicked from the Focus anyhow..lol
