Vibration from 'on boost' onwards (PD130)

This started happening last week, randomly. Drove car to gym, was fine. 2hrs later, drove home on the same route and did this from the off. Can best be described as a buzzing or vibration noise, only from 1800/1900rpm onwards, most noticeable when 'making progress'.

Almost seems induction based, but seems unlikely as I'm pretty sure it's coming from the right-hand side of the engine bay (from the view of sitting in the car). Boost pipe perhaps?

Car is remapped, with PD160 intake and Green panel filter. There's been no performance degredation since it started. It's in for service and cambelt within the next fortnight (hopefully) and will get it looked at then anyway. Was just after a few ideas about it before then.

It sounds quite nice in a strange way, but I know it shouldn't be doing it really! :o

DMF prehaps as my fathers focus made these vibrations along with other things. Not sure which side the flywheel is on on the PD130 though so sorry.

Cheers, did think of this but wouldn't that vibrate more often, i.e. not starting when boost comes online? Perhaps when moving off as well?

Anyone else?

No idea mate, could just be resonating at certain frequencies or as the torque starts to come through properly.

:bump: - any more ideas people? I had the service and belts done two weeks ago, no problems highlighted at all. Had it on the RR at Awesome too, and mentioned this to them, but nothing was reported back.

I'm dropping it back into the garage on Monday for them to do a proper shakedown/roadtest, see if they can track down the source...

Steve, DMF vibrations seem to come through the gearbox, quite a dull noise, so I dont think this is what you're experiencing.

The noise you are describing sounds just like what my mate is having in his FR. Its a boost pipe at the back of the engine rattling against something, moving it across is a short term fix. He is having a modified part fitted under warranty, suggesting that this is a known problem? The modified hose attaches to something else to keep it in place...

Sorry for being so vague, but hope it helps.

FWIW, its quite a loud vibration, only really noticable when making progress, and fairly intermittant. :)

After re-reading your post, I'm sure this is the same problem. I'll ask Matt (FR owner) for more details...

Thanks for that Tom, not the vague at all - I know what you're trying to get at! It's certainly another lead to chase up. I'm almost certain the gearbox/gearchange doesn't feel any different. Any the driveability of the car hasn't been affected either, which I thought it must have to do if it was DMF related. Which is why it's so confuddling! :rubchin:

I'll mention this boost pipe issue to my garage man on Monday, certainly :thumbup:

YAY! Mine has started doing it. I thought it was turbo or zorst related. Best description is (on mine) that it sounds almost like when yoiu have an earthing fault. Starts at about 1800 rpm and never goes away. Only when on boost.

I guessed it wasn't turbo as its been doing it for 3k miles.

Any idea which pipe and where it is? Also what is the replacement part number?

The problem is actually locating it , but then it sounds like the hard work of locating it has lalready been done.

I know Matt has been to and from the dealers for 20k miles, but trial and error has eventually traced it! :thumbup:

jon, I have to say that what you say you are experiencing doesnt sound similar??

Mines done this for ages (obviously not an Ibiza lol). Its had a new turbo, because it was thought the first one was making this noise. But no, its back :thumbdwn: Pi$$es me off aswell...

Dont want to take it back to the dealers so im stuck with it.

Well I never - didn't know other people were having similar issues. Hopefully you can get it sorted then Dave, if you help them to look in the right direction :D

In Tavia's case, it does sound *slightly* different, as the noise on mine seems to tail off in you keep your foot in past 3k. What was concerning me is that I've noticed it below boost this week, so started to rule out boost pipe/turbo area. But maybe it's just the turbo starting to ready itself? I've also noticed a slight vibration at tickover. Very slight and not at every start, which made me worry about the flywheel again. Anyone know what that might be?

I havn't a clue what it is/what it might be/where its coming from... :P And I dont want my car taken to bits (again) causing even more rattles :mad:

Mine also tails off past 3k so it must be the same problem. Thats why I thought it was a fault with my turbo because thats where max boost is, isn't it. But if a new turbo didnt cure it then :ne_nau:

Would be good if a fix was found :thumbup:

Got exactly the same problem on my superb...comes from the right hand side of the engine on boost ...sounds intake or exhaust related but garage could find nothing ..suggested turbo may be on the way out ...but wait and see if it gets worse :cool:

I have taken the whole air box apart and then changed the K&N to a normal filter ..this made it a bit quieter ..which still makes me think it is intake related

UPDATE: I'm very pleased to say it seems sorted now (*touches wood*). With the addition of some padding and a few cable ties, there's no more vibration :)

For info, my mechanic did ring a Seat dealer (ING in Warrington) but they'd not head of a workround for this type of problem, nor a modified part...

Anyway, hooray :D
