Superb 2.0 140 bhp -- DONT BUY ONE

Featured Replies

As some know we have been having a problem with the emissions control system on our Superb. Its a design fault that Skoda have admitted will quite probably cause the car to fail again BUT & this is the amazing bit have no intention of fixing the fault & in no way intend to help us. They have said if it breaks down again they will of course tow us in & fix it (whoopee)

Our only course of action now is to sue the Dealer for our money back & its not his fault, scary but the way the law stands your contract is with the dealer not Skoda & you can go after him if goods are "not fit for purpose".

We dont really want to get rid of the car & I understand it can be modified to remove the problem but that has implications to the warranty

I obviously can not elaborate further for legal reasons at this stage & probably am being unwise by even posting but if you or any of your friends are looking to buy a 140 bhp Diesel Superb based upon our experiences to date you may regret it

Its a shame as otherwise its a fantastic car & with other Engines must be a joy to own.

I just feel its only fair to warn others, to most of us our hard earned needs to be spent wisely & we really dont deserve the dont give a duck attitude that Skoda are showing.

If anyone is on any other Skoda or VAG forums please feel free to post this on those forums to save others.

One member has already been very helpful having had similar problems but if anyone else is having problems PM me or call on 07799 623693, the more info we can pool the better a case we have.

Good luck Stuart.

Just out of interest is it the same engine in the 140 Octavia, and if so will it have the same problem?

It is the same engine but it won't have the same problem due to 2 things:

1) the location of the offending item

2) the method by which it is configured to work

Hope that is vague enough for you Stuart and explicit enough for you Pat

Yes it is the same and I've never had a problem with my Octavia

 Hope you get things sorted swiftly.

As above does it effect the Oct'y aswell ?

As above, read my reply.....

Be-ing a bit of a thicky wht can't it be configured to work like the Octy unit which is OK?, by Skoda so as not to affect warrenty?

I hope you can bring this to a satisfactory resolution Stuart.

It'll be interesting to see the veiw the dealer takes, it's obviously unfit for purpose.

I strongly suspect that all Euro Cat IV diesel engines will be a pain to own long term because of the requirement to deal with particulates. The installation in the Superb is indeed "suspect" due to space restrictions. Other manufacturers have their problems too - Peugeot/Citroen servicing at around 80k is highly expensive due to the additive replenishment required.

The age of the decent diesel is now probably over. I bought one of the last 130 PS Superbs.

Note that the new Passat has a transverse engine - I suspect there was little Euro IV design effort put in to the old NS design, used in the Superb. Keep us informed as to how your dealer resolves this difficulty.

rotodiesel.

Hmmm, having just signed up to buy one this has taken the edge off my new car excitement :(

Would be interested to hear what the actual issue and what the warranty effecting modification is.

suspect it relates to non transverse installation of the unit ..... thus would assume that "the problem" also affects Audi's ???

or is this why the PD140 never appeared in the last passat?

Sorry but I really dont want to debate any more facts in public for obvious reasons.

I will reiterate what Jon has already said though. I have been researching this for a few weeks & the only car in the Skoda range to my knowledge with this problem is the 140 bhp Diesel Superb.

Its a real shame its come to this as all our Skodas to date have been fantastic cars as is this, bar the one problem.

I would love to respond to this in the manner it deserves but I don't think it would help your situation.

Stuart,

Hope everything works out for you in the end mate.

The point made concerning the non use of the 140 PS engine in the old Passat says it all. There was clearly no development work done on a Euro IV NS engine installation.

I like my Superb, but I had a Passat before it. It is very evident to me that Skoda have absolutely no design authority whatever, other than adding Tesco hooks, a brolly and two useless red LEDs which reflect in the pointlessly shiny gear lever end. (My LEDs were quickly fixed with black tape).

All of the design shortcomings in the Passat have appeared in the Superb - light bulbs everywhere, but not one around the ignition key slot; boot light covered up when you latch up the boot mat to access the spare; spare upside down so you can't check the pressure etc. (There are lots more).

It's a real shame the VW boot boys didn't give Skoda any design authority.

stuart,

call me if you need "rejection" tips.

A few facts.....

I'd like to point out that its NOT the same 140 bhp engine as the Octavia in the Superb.

The Octavia is a 2.0 16v PD

The Superb is a 2.0 8V PD

Also the offending emission system is very different on the Octavia (only so far fitted to the 170 VRS as far as im aware). The Octavia has a self regenerating DPF.

Stuart,

Paul should know, he's been rejected loads of times. :P ;)

Every day is a school day :)

So is the Octavia engine the same as that fitted to say an Audi A3 or this engine the same as the Superb?

Bit confused now

Bit confused now

I'm not sure on the Audi side of things but the 2.0 8V is only fitted to the Superb and possibly some Passats (old shape) I've seen one but it was a US spec vehicle.

Ok I am confused now, what exactly does this particle filter do and is mine likely to fail or go wrong? I do a lot of long journeys with my car 20 miles plus each time. Can someone either pm me or tell me what this is all about.

Kind Regards

Concerned SJ

The particulate filter sits in the exhaust. It filters out nasty soot etc in the exhaust. The Superb has a non self regenerating type, hence the tank of gloop in your boot that will need topping up at some point. Also the filter has a service life and will need replacing at around 80k I believe although no one knows exactly.

Where exactly is this tank of gloop?
