Superb 2.0 140 bhp -- DONT BUY ONE

Featured Replies

The particulate filter sits in the exhaust. It filters out nasty soot etc in the exhaust. The Superb has a non self regenerating type, hence the tank of gloop in your boot that will need topping up at some point. Also the filter has a service life and will need replacing at around 80k I believe although no one knows exactly.

If (and of course it may not be ) the particulate filter is causing issues ( as it does on many mfr's cars) why not just remove the FAP, lose the gloop tank(s) and wire the appropriate sensor to ground/+ive/whatever signal the car needs to see...? ;)

This will probably invalidate the warranty, as stated in the first post.

Thanks for the help of those who have PM'd me & spoken to me. It appears legally Im on my own on this, the dealers attitude is Skoda wont help us so theres nothing we are prepared to do for you.

Options appear to be live with it or sue the stealer, its a crazy situation when Skoda admit theres a problem. My guess is that quite a few are failing & if they give in on this one they will get loads more back.

Ive heard theres possibly a bit of a stink about these in Germany, if anyone knows more can they posyt here or PM me.

For those who already have these cars, provided you dont do a lot of slow town driving or other situations where the exhaust dosent get hot enough to enable the filter to burn off the soot its collected you should be OK. Ours gave warning lights 3 times & finally failed completely when making long decents in the French mountains.

If your "on your own" on this matter, could you not go public via magazine's and such? Diesel Car get stuck in on such matters for example. Perhaps making a song and dance in public might cause them to reassess their response to you.

That avenue is being activly persued, the only snag is that a lot of magazines gain a lot of revenue from advertising so arent too keen on anoying the manufacturers so selectivly choosing which door to knock on is the aim at the moment and its very much in hand

Interesting conversation but in fairness to Stuart I think it should be kept on topic.

Back to the top, just to aid anyone car hunting this weekend

I had mine up on a ramp at the weekend and removed the access panel to this filter, took a couple of photos as well. If anyone wants to see them PM me and I will email them to you.

Is there an access panel over the filter?

Is there an access panel over the filter?

There was a circular panel with three bolts I removed to look at the filter and the wires etc. The filter a sort of semi circular tank thing, as you know.

Thats not the particulate filter, thats the tank for the fluid.

The filter is part of the exhaust under the car.

Oh, sorry my mistake.

Oh, sorry my mistake.

I'll let you off ;)

I've got plenty of material explaining the layout and operation of the system. Hiwever i'm not allowed to copy it because of copyright laws etc.

The octavia 140 does not have a particle filter and I'm told it also has a 16valve head rather than the 8v on the superb. I'm also told the 140 passat (Audi also?) has the same engine and set up as the octavia, not the superb.

I've just taken delivery of a new Octavia VRS diesel and it completed its first particle filter regen on Sunday, had me panicking at first as the engine note turned tractor like at idle but the performance was the same. The process finished after @ 10mins and there has been no problems since.

I have a mate who had problems immediately with a new 140 superb (70 miles before it calved). The dealer tried to help but got nothing but time wasting from Skoda UK. It seems they have released a lemon and are trying to suggest driving style is the cause.

Just thought I would float this back to the top for the benefit of others

All new VW Passats share the extended Golf platform and have a transverse engine. The poor old Superb is now out on a limb in that it's an old B5 Passat in drag. There will have been minimal development effort put into the installation of a cat IV diesel engine into this old chassis and Skoda themselves are unlikely to have any expertise - it all comes from VW.

I would be very cautious indeed about the installation of the 140 PS engine in the Superb - as it's all tooled up, any "fix" is likely to be a bodge. Find a good late 130 PS engine, it was the final encarnation of the B5 Passat and is well developed. The economy is better too.

Oh bugger..... see sig

My car is due to arrive 2nd half of December.

Accept the car only on the basis that this fault does not arise. State to your dealer in writing that if the car has to be towed to any dealer for this particular problem (print out this thread) then the car will be automatically rejected.

Hard - but so is earning money.

For anyone buying one of these new I could not agree more, unfortunately you need to cover yourself these days as Im discovering but time will tell where this ends up for us

If you bought over the web (via broker) or phone I think you'll still covered by the Distance Selling Regulations which legally enables the seller to reject the goods within a specified cooling off period. Again all needs to be checked out but I believe this is 7 days from delivery (not order). So if you had any 2nd thoughts you might want to look into this. I'm no lawyer so check it out on web. Note no reason for rejecting the goods is needed. Check with Trading Standards etc..

My 2.5 arrives Nov 18th but from all the posts I'm still assuming this is not affected.

Re the problem itself. Have the people affected tried publicity? You could contact Daily Telegraph Honest John column and highlight issue. Used them once when Daewoo messed parents around with their car. Within days £1500 they wanted my folks to pay was covered by manufacturer. Good source of car knowledge here as well. Car makers hate bad publicity Honest John
