tdi won't keep running after starting

Featured Replies

my 99 T slx 110 130k miles,sometimes won't keep running after being started.

It starts normally but immediately dies no matter if the accelerator is kept down.

It doesn't splutter just the revs die with no smoke.

Normally happens when it's been standing for2-4 hrs, but has happened overnight. If left for 5-10mins it starts fine with then no other issues.

It only happens when my missus drives her, so this is all 2nd hand info.

Thanks in advance

Ken

Sounds like the immobiliser to me. Does your missus use a different key to you?, and does the immobiliser light come on? If so it could need the read coil to dash panel wire replacing.

Sounds about right to me. Had the same problem on mine (S reg SLX TDI)- turned out to be a loose wire on the immobiliser.

Hi guys

The immobiliser doesn't come on as far as I know, but she does use a different key. She does use the car a lot more than I do though..

I'll get her to use my key instead and report back. Any other suggestions?

Many Thanks

Ken

If this only happens after a longer period of sitting, then it could very well be an air leak in the fuel lines.

Take a look at the clear fuel line from the fuel filter to the injection pump. If you see air in there then that's it. Small air bubbles do not matter. Size of a thumb nail and bigger do count.

My theory is that the fuel flows back to the tank and then the engine starts with the fuelthat is left in the high pressure lines. In comes the air bubble and it dies. On the next starting attempt the air is purged from the system and all is fine again.

It usuallly happens when it's been sitting for about 2-3 hours.

It won't start for about 3 attempts, if it's left for 5 minutes it will start straight away with no more running problems till the next time.

thanks

Ken
