lumpy idling on mk1 vrs

Featured Replies

Can any one help, car runs lumpy when idling(idles between 700rpm-600rpm after its warmed up)when i try to pull out of my drive and away from traffic when cold its as though theres nothing there, then its ok,after a drive the revs are at 800rpm when its idling and it seems ok,But it starts to drop back down to 700rpm-600rpm when im sat on my drive and its tried to stall some times.Had mobile mechanic out with a snap-on dianostic kit and he told me there doesn't seem to be any thing wrong, apart from that cars fine.dont want to start spending loads of money going back and forth to dealers,if i can sort it my self.Any advice welcome

Sounds like a coolant temp sensor or even a throttle body fault.

I'd get the sensor changed and reset the throttle body into basic settings if it will.

Where abouts in South Yorks are you as I'm on the West/South Yorks border? If the suggestions above don't sort your problems then I have vagcom if you want your car checking over with that .

tbh a few of us have this problem and i don't think thers a cure my was ok for about three days after a 40k service then it returned using air-con seems to help

don't ask me why though maybe lummox can shed some light on that one

I have the same thing with mine, and just consider it a 'characteristic' of the car.

Seems to sort it's self out after about a minute though.

yeah mine was fine when i pulled outside work this morning but i had just filled it with fresh super unleaded (which i always use)

wonder if its related to the fresh tank of petrol does petrol go off after a few days ??

mine had same thing just after cam belt change... i'm using climate control all time as its bloody cold on way to work at 5.30 and it seems to be fine... again think its just a 20v turbo thing as my mate with a A4 1.8t has same thing

I might be wrong on this one but i think using your climate control raises the revs slightly.hence your cars runs ok on tick over.i could be wrong though

If it's purely an idle speed problem with no other signs of a fault the idle speed can be increased using Custom-Settings/Lemmiwinks and I expect in vagcom somewhere too.

Possible Air-Leak?

mine come's and goes can't seem to find a pattern to it either

I'd just like to say thanks to eddy for looking at the problem i've got with my vrs,he seems to know what he's talking about and good with vrs's and has hopefully sorted my problem.once again cheers eddy

Glad you got it sorted. Nice one!

so what was the cure then are you going to share the info :inq:

Problem isn't fixed yet but there is an airleak which Baz is gonna investigate further. I also did a throttle body alignment while I had the opportunity.

Keep this going folks, i'm slowly closing down the problem with my Vrs.

Likewise, pulling out onto the main road 1st thing if that auto choke is going it's a nightmare, i either look like a learner driver (kangarooing, nearly stalling) or a scally who's just been fortuante enough to nick a Vrs. I hope the boys in blue don't see me at that location and time.

The problem seems to have increased somewhat since the re-map but like people have said after a mile / few minutes the choke is off, problem is gone.

I have found though that if i don't 'give it a bit' as it's getting warm and i settle into a very carefull driving routine, when i do come to put my foot down there's nothing there. This is worrying me, turbo and dump valve go alot quieter, i have to switch the engine on an off again to rectify the problem. Honestly it's like driving a standard 1.8 ... (possibly the air flow metre)

Help!

hi guys, this appears to be a common problem! ive got an issue with mine along these lines too.

When the cars at idle it seems to miss a beat every 2-5seconds, i can feel it through the pedal and steering wheel even though it is a slight glitch its really annoying me. any suggestions? i thought about taking it to the garage i got it from but wanted to try here for suggestions first as im worried ill lose my remap if i take it to skoda for fixing.(apr remap)
