Fuel For vRS

Featured Replies

Getting the 53 reg vRS on Saturday. 32300 miles on the clock. What fuel would you recommend?? Super unleaded? BP ultimate?? Normal Unleaded etc???? Does it actually make a difference. your opinion would be aprreciated! I have a 1.6 Renault Megane (YAWN!) at the moment and it runs the same on normal or super, so thought I would ask the question to you all?

The main thing is to avoid cheap supermarket fuel that hasn't got additives like the leading brands. I personally prefer Shell V-power but for a standard car you will be fine with branded normal unleaded from the likes of BP or Shell.

yikes, I have had my VRS for 2 months now, someone recommended BP Ultimate and I used this for about 3 tankfuls, did not notice any difference in driving. T'other week I filled up with Morrisons diesel and have just done again today after I read on here somewhere that the ones with additives in were not good(can't remember exactly why)

I'm confused, don't want to do my engine any harm, but don't want to waste money either:confused:

I use Sainsbury's super unleaded and I dont think it makes a sod of a difference. Still get 39-40 mpg on a long run and plenty of go under the right foot. Also, service intervals of c18k. Why pay 6-9p per litre (30-45p per GALLON) more for exactly the same stuff? Where do you think he supermarkets get their fuel from??

The same refinery but without the additives.

You won't do your engine any harm - all UK cars are designed to run on a minimum of 95 RON fuel :D

tried the vpower stuff the other week... tbh theres no difference to be had between that and morrisons apart from one is 84.9 and the other is 93.9 per litre...

I think the debate about supermarket fuel and branded is total rubbish... morrisons buys there fuel from a supplier (work for them so not saying who) and its the same stuff as everyone else 95 ron... sainsburys, tesco etc use the same quality stuff... just you pay more if you go to esso or texaco etc.

I don't recall seeing anyone do an official test on fuels anywhere to disprove my thoughts... if someone knows where there is one i'd like to have a read as i'm not a fuel expert so would like an opinion off a pro... not a marketing buff

You'll only see the difference of vpower if you adjust the timing. There's quite a gain to be had and I'm happy paying the extra.

Evo magazine and Pistonheads among others have done fuel tests. Evo stripped engines down after 1000miles use on different fuels and the internals were very dirty after using supermarket stuff and very clean after using optimax. Another test which looked at how much power could be squeezed out using different fuels found using tesco 99ron gave an increase in the 10's of bhp when the car was optimised for the fuel.

I'm quite interested in this subject of which fuel is best.

I've had my octy vrs for just over 2 months now and have always used shell vpower (was optimax for the first two tankfulls but I reckon it was probably already being mixed through by then anyway.)

One thing I'm not sure about is the fuel economy I'm getting - averages out at around 28-30 mpg over a tankfull (and the 2nd trip computer also says I've averaged about 29.6 over 2000 odd miles).

Thing is I'm sure I got better economy from the first couple of refills, getting about 360 miles from the first tank and over 330 on the second. (Also when full the computer always guesses at 400 miles - yeah right!)

I accept that my heavy right boot may play a part now I'm used to the power but I have tried driving like a grandad for a week and still saw no improvement!

I'd like to try some other fuels but locally to me there are only esso's (which I always used before but am sure don't do a "super" unleaded), shell (currently using obviously!), morrisons or sainsburys (which is ALWAYS a flipping nightmare of long waits for a pump/till to be free  ).

Anyone using either esso of shell's products?

I'm only interested in the higher octane rated stuff so no standard 95 ron please :) .

Matt

Ive been filling up with Tesco's standard unleaded, and ever since, touch wood, my judder/stutter problem has got ALOT better

I had a standard 03 vRS - tried different fuels but there was no performance difference between 95 and 97/98. As I understand, MK1 as standard was built for running 95, so other than fancy additives, SUL gets you nothing more.

New car says use 98 so I do.

Well my mk1 says to use 98 or 99 ron in the filler cap???!!!!!

Well my mk1 says to use 98 or 99 ron in the filler cap???!!!!!

Only thing I remember on my filler cap was a tyre pressure guide.

I might very well be mistaken, but I thought MK1s were tuned for 95 and MK2s for 98.

No doubt someone with proper knowledge will correct me :)
