vRS - does it have variable service intervals or not? Can I rely on the indicator?

Featured Replies

Hi all, have done a search on this but now more confused than ever!

Have an 05 furby vRS, and was told by salesman it was variable service intervals.

SO I happily didn't get it serviced at 10k and waited for the light to come on - and it did, at 15.5k miles (and about 10months)! Now, I do mainly motorway so thought it was ok, and assumed it coming on at this mileage must mean it was varaible, otherwise it should have come on at 10k miles right?

When i got it serviced, they said nothing about the mileage but said the next service was in a further 10k which surprised me. On questioning they knew nothing about variable intervals (surprise there then) and on re reading the manuals, fabias don't have it anyway, only octavias etc.

So my question: have I potentially f*cked my engine by going 5.5k over the recommended service interval (and on a first service!) , along with the warranty if there're problems?

Can I rely on the service light to tell me when to get it serviced or will I have to clockwatch from now on? If so, why bother with a service light at all?

Sorry for long post!

Jon

Someone should be along to point you in the right direction soon. But from reading past threads im sure both fabia and octavias can use both variable and interval servicing.

I dont think you have done any damage as your first light came on at 15.5k variable, now your running on interval.

A few people have changed from variable to fixed servicing. It just means now you are going to be on a fixed service interval.

The Fabia is on fixed service intervals only (it doesn't have the correct sensors for variable), therefore it needs servicing at 10k/1 year intervals whichever is the sooner.....

Chris

Fabias ONLY do fixed service intervals at 10k, which is rather annoying to me as I do a few k miles / month so a week's delay in booking in for a service = bad :)

All Fabia's (to my knowledge) use standard 10k or 1 year (which ever is sooner) service intervals. Therefore your car should have been serviced at 10k. It's difficult to say if anything will have been damaged by leaving the changed too late. I guess you'll have to wait and see...

Just noticed the 'salesman said' part of your original post. It is obvious this sales person has not done his/her homework, I'd get it booked in asap. Damage wise should be fine but it's the warranty side of things that is a concern.

Mine's gonna be out of warranty soon as I'll be screaming past 60k :(

Yep, Fabia is FIXED 10k/1yr ONLY. Period, full stop, end of.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it tbh, just make sure you service it as per your service schedule from now on. ;)

You won't have done terrible damage either, so don't worry about that.

Nope, although it might affect resale value if someone looks at the service history and notices it's not been done at the necessary intervals. However, if you're trading it in at the same dealer, that will become their problem ;)

It will be negligble tbh, stop fretting.

so your next service is in 4.5k miles :)

On mine, it's VERY unreliable.

I've learned the service light reset technique off by heart now.

Just out of interest, how do you reset the service light? It may be handy to know for the future!

I had had mine serviced three times (every 10k) then the light suddenly decided to come on after 12 months! If it's every 10 k fixed, they should have disabled the service indicator light...

Its in your manual.

If you say so - I'd be walking away from a car that hadn't been serviced on time ;)

You are a tart.

Tbh, a full service history is VERY important to me when buying a car. However, like my Focus, the first service was 1500 miles late, but since then its had a dealer "oil and filter only" service inbetween each of the standard services, showing for an overall very well looked after car.

I dont think many people would be bothered about one service being a few k late, its not like its been neglected for several years.

A valid point all the same Chris.

I'd walk away too.

The focus TDCI has a 1500mile window either side of the given mileage anyway.
