Just out of curiosity really, is the 4x4 system used on the old Octavia/New Octavia the same as the Quattro system as used on various Audi's and the VW R32 etc?

I'm sure this has been asked before but:

Old Octavia is the same as V6 4motion, Mk4 R32, A3 Quattro, S3, TT and any Golf Mk4 platform 4wd.

New Octavia uses a revised version of the haldex system with a feature called pre-X (which my uprated controller goes some way to replicating) this is also found in the new R32, 4 Motion, A3 Quattro, S3, TT etc..

The larger cars such as A4 upwards and Passat use a torsen diff but again it's shared across all cars on the platform.

So is 4motion in mk4 golf full time awd then? I thought 4x4 octy used only fwd in normal use.

Nope, same as Octavia.

It's permanently available but only engages as required. A very clever system giving the benefits of 4wd with the economy of 2wd.
