1.8T waterpump/cambelt

Featured Replies

hi all,

just wondering when is recommended to change the cambelt and waterpump on these engines?

thanks

kenny :)

I think it should be done at 120,000.

However I did mine at 70,000 :)

4 years or 60,000 I think is what Skoda U.K is recommending now!

My water pump is 5 years/102k old and still on the original

Sadly had the cambelt done at 70k before I read about water pumps on here.

60k is the interval I prefer to work.

my cars done 110k and had never had one when i bought it so changed it straight away.... GSF sell the brass impeller pump for next to nothing (the standard ones have a nylon impeller which is prone to failure around 80k apparently)

i did the change myself and it is the worst cambelt i've ever fitted... so its worth getting someone to do it if the price is right... skoda is a total rip off at more that

was there not a problem with waterpumps at one point? impellors breaking up?

Yes and it still happens if you use the standard ones. Most people replace with the metal impellor type from GSF.

Eddy would you recommend me changing the pump to one with a metal impellor or wait till my belt is due? ive covered 30k miles

Have a look at this link:

Honestjohn Carguides

Then select your car e.g. Skoda then Octavia, then read "What's bad."

"1.8 20v engines are snapping their timing belts at 70,000 - 80,000 miles and the extensive damage this causes is not repairable. The car will need a replacement engine."

Honestjohn.co.uk. is an informative website.

If you want to scare yourself select a Peugeot/Citroen and read "What's bad"

70-80K?? mine got done at 110K but was admitidly a bit noisy but working perfectly.

Oh dear, better get all the ones I have put new cylinder heads on then and put engines in them then

seems a bit of a problem, im not sure what to do now.

would it be overkill to change my pump and cambelt at 2 1/2 years old and 30k miles?

Well £200 for piece of mind seems to be your question.

If you are worrying, do it because if you don't and it fails you will be kicking yourself.

thanks for your advice

I've been told the belt needs changing @4yrs......Have since spoken to Skoda UK and they agree with the dealer i bourght the car off....Inspection of the belt @ 4yrs, and replacement @ 120,000.

I'll be changing the belt @ 60,000 + the water pump. My Octi VRS is a 52 plate.
