How easy is it to instal DAB aerial in place of standard one?

Featured Replies

I've just bought a Revo DAB unit. It works ok with glass mount aerial, as long as I'm in a very strong signal area, but useless otherwise. I've seen proper roof mount DAB aerials for sale that replace the existing one, but how easy are they to replace? Can I use existing cable, for example? I was hoping it would just use the existing cable for both systems and I just fit a splitter at the HU end.

I don't want to butcher the car too much as it's only 2 months old.

TIA

Steve.

The DAB signal will definately need its own wire, whatever aerial you use. But running a wire under the plastic trim isn't too much of a chore.

headlining out at the least, isn't it? i'd be tempted to get a car audio shop to do it?

Hi mate,

I had a Revo unit in my car for a few months, and fitted the replacement external aerial.

It's quite easy actually:

First step was to route the new cable from the Revo through the IP to either the drivers side or passenger side A post.

Up the A post and just under the headlining all the way to the rear of the car ( to do this we gently removed the seals from the door apertures, which gives access to tuck the cable under the headlining).

Open the boot and remove the central plastic piece of trim, basically the piece at the very top which covers the CHMSL (if i remember).

The gently pull the headlining down and untuck it from the C pillars, this gives access to the big bolt which holds the aerial on. Unscrew this, unplug the cables currently attached, remove the old aerial, replace with the new one and reattach the cables.

Reseat the headlining, re fit the plastic trim.

Sit back and enjoy your DAB!!!

Just follow mpopesvrs's instructions and you won't go far wrong.

I've fitted a JVC unit a few months ago and I did it more or less the same way, except I started at the back and work forward. Should take no more than an hour.

Good luck and enjoy.

Just a few things. What make of DAB aerial did you use, was it powered and does the exisiting FM lead plug into it as well so you hav 2 seperate downleads to the tuners?

TIA

I bought the External aerial from the REVO website, not too sure what the brand was to be honest. It was powered and and if I remember there is only one cable running down the car length to the HU.
