Spanner icon and whinging about oil?

Featured Replies

My dear little Fabia has started whining (metaphorically that is). Where the trip distance thingy would normally be it has taken to displaying a little spanner and flashing "OIL". Oil there is plenty; I gave it a little top-up and it is at the top of the recommended level range.

From the manual it would suggest that the dealer failed to reset the service clock at the last service (just over 5,000 miles ago). Is it safe to just reset this, or should I take it in to be checked? It seems to be running perfectly well, and as stated, the oil level is as it should be on the dipstick doodah.

Ta muchly.

just reset it , it tells you how in the manual , or go and kick up a fuss at the dealer

Thats the service indicator, as you have already guessed. I would take it to them to reset.

I am tempted to say that it is telling you an oil service is due, however a long while ago a friend of my father had his oil light flash, dipstick was fine so he took it to dealer, there was some sort of blockage in the dipstick tube so it was reading full, the engine itself however was nearly empty

The dipstick level did go up when I put a bit more oil in, so I would think that bit works ok. Hmm. I'll give them a ring tomorrow and ask. It's not the big colourful oil warning light, it's just the service indicator in the mile-o-meter bit.

Ta chaps.

The 'oil' warning is a service light and nowt to do with the actual oil level.

Very true, as mine just 'came up' and my oil is at the right levels (and probably still fine too... ) so it's going in for an oil/filter change Tuesday :)

Proof of this is in the fact that the Fabia doesnt have an oil level sensor anyhow.

If the red pressure warning comes up its pretty much too late anyhow..lol

mine has done this randomly, so have others who have posted on here, just reset it :)

Btw the oil light low pressure light on ==> too late thing is not just for VAG group cars, it tends to true for most cars that don't have a proper oil pressure gauge.

SWMBOs Kia Picanto has no temperature gauge either, just a set of 'still cold' (blue) and 'overheated' (red) warning lights. Personally I hate that but for the money it is a good car I suppose :)

Same as the New VW Beetle.

I take it you are not referring to your avatar there  :P

Suppose it comes down to cost/styling requirements for a particular car, a few gauges don't hurt though IMO :D

Thanks again :)

I'll give the dealer a ring anyways to be on the safe side.
