How an Engines built & runs

Featured Replies

Found this on the tube, Interesting view showing how an engines built, watch it all the way through if you have time. Excellent for those who arent 100% clued up on what goes on inside an Engine

They are good little animations those. It's similar to the Deutz (sp) Screen Saver one.

i know it's only for illustration purposes but the bit at the beginning when he pistons go in as wrong, the crank would go in from the bottom, and the piston/conrod would go in from the top

Very clever, but why go to all the details, including the oil dipstick but forget to put the oil filter on.

You've never put pistons in from underneath then I take it Tom?

not on a car/van/bus/lorry/tractor/boat engine!! it isn't even possible because the main crankshaft web lands are narrower than the bore!

but on some marine engines with like deutz, and aother which i cant remember at the moment, it is possible but very very difficult.....

the other problem lies in the fact that the crown of teh piston is a smaller diameter than the skirt, so when you compress the piston rings with a piston ring compressor the rings 'pop out' when you try to put it in from the bottom.

and aside from this, in the majority of cases it's easier to put the crankshaft in first (except some of the chev v8's)

Nice little vid that.

There's some work gone into that

It's is the 'Deutz' one...

Buggered if I know why the screen saver is called 'Deutz' when it as got a Ford Duratec in it though!

What's more worrying though is I got it from someone who worked at Perkins Engines and he said management were concerned that a lot of people had a competitor's screen saver. I was more concerned that they couldn't tell it was a petrol engine...

oil filter is in the housing on the front of the block just above the sump , the filter is not the normal metal canister type but a paper element accessed by unscrewing a plastic cup . Later engine versions have gone to a metal canister filter on a different housing .That engine is also used in the Mazda 3, 6 and new MX5 iirc , in 1.8,2.0,2.3 and 2.3 litre turbo versions
