Have broken a connector - help please

Featured Replies

I, rather clumsily, have broken the black plastic connector that attaches the electric to the MAF on my Fabia VRS. - was removing it to get at the air filter more easily.

I have stuck the bits back together with superglue.

However I wish to replace the whole item. It looks to me that the black plastic connector splits open and could be removed from the inner connector with its orange seal.

Can it be removed without damaging the wiring etc?

Does the black plastic connector have a Skoda part number or can it be obtained elsewhere?

Dunno if you can buy the connector seperately...? If it was mine i would get the connector from a breakers yard with 3 or 4 inches of the loom/wire on it and cut and solder it in place. just a thought.

From looking at the photo, I would plug it back in, and wrap some insulation tape round it, and it will be fine.

Dewhursts springs to mind , but i have to agree those plugs can be a pain to get off unless you know exactly how to do it , i agree with above , as a temporary measure the plug could be secured with insulting tape , but whether it is advisable to cut the plug off and solder a new one on with wires is debatable , if not done spot on you may get an incorrect resistance in the wires causing running concerns

Most VW plugs have a PT number on them.

It can be fiddly to change them though.

If it were me I would want to change the connector. As Stu says, it will have a part number on it somewhere, and I bet its a fiddly fecker to change.

Yeah I know what you mean. The trouble is the connector is upside down and you cant easily see how to get it apart. I did it before OK, but this time it did it wrong.:o

Ill check for a part number in the cold light of day.

Just for completion. I replaced the broken connector quite easily (bought 1J0 973 775 A flat contact housing with helper contact catch £1.19 + VAT from local VW dealer). The End cap needs to be removed by feeing the two clips and prising it open and off the connector. The pink plastic thing inside the connector is removed with a tiny screwdriver releasing two clips via 2 holes in the top of the connector. Note position of each wire - these are numbered on the connector. Each wire (4) with its metal terminal can then be removed from the black connector by lifting a black plastic locking tab inside the connector. One hole is blanked off and the rubber blanking plug needs to be removed and placed in the new connector. Reassemble new connector, pink thing and end cap in reverse order.

I also now know how to remove these connectors without breaking them.

i've probably got some of those connectors lying around if you want them.... it's really hard to get the terminals out without damaging the crimped contacts tho......

i know this sounds mental but it may be easier to just cut the plug off the end and splice in a new socket with wires attached out of a similar car's wiring loom from the breakers yard

Ta but job done now. Using some of those little "precision" screwdrivers and a little patience it wasnt difficult to get the terminals out. But I did destroy what was left of the old connector in doing so - the internal terminal locking tabs tend to snap off when you lift them to release the metal terminals. But overrall much quicker than slicing in a length of loom and result looks like new. Jules:D

Sorry to depart a little from the tread but does anyone know where to get hold of a tool to remove the MAF?

Just referring to the photos in the first post you can see it is a strange type of torx head with a circle in the middle. I have bought a set of the security torx removal tools thinking it might be size T-25 but it does not fit.

Got the MAF symptoms although dealer says there is nothing wrong with it.

Thanks in advance.

its deff a security torx bit must be a diff size though.

Its five point bit rather than the six of a Torx.

Thanks for the replies.

Now in search of a five point bit.
