4WD vs 2WD

Featured Replies

that is definitly not the R32 in the middle but the golf V GTi, a FWD golf just won't launch like an AWD car can.

Sorry bud, although I do respect your opinion I'm affraid I think you are wrong on this occasion. I have just gone through it again and paused the video at strategic points and the middle car is definately the R32 and the car screaming ahead is the Gti

steve, a FWD car like a regular street golf GTi ain't gonna scream away from an AWD car of similar ilk ever. if it really was that way round and the gti was that much faster then the R32 would have kicked forwards off the line then got overtaken but it certainly wouldn't get left behind by a FWD golf.

Take a closer look at the video, you can clearly see in the wing mirror the distinctive 'chrome/brushed alloy' grille mouth of the R32 and if you look closely at the Golf in the distance, it doesn't have R32 twin pipes?.

Anyhow, if the Gti is pushing out a claimed 350bhp there is no reason as to why it would'nt obliterate a standard R32, or is there

forgot to say, the R32 would only get left like that if it wasn't being driven properly, if they pulled away like a FWD then it would be pointless. an AWD car needs to be driven like a hooligan to get the best from it.

A plausible explanation, but that Gti did look awfully quick!.

oh i agree that whilst on the move the gti would easily destroy R32 but off the line i don't think it would. out of interest have you ever been in an AWD car or been up against one and had it launched properly? they take off with no fuss at full speed, great fun :D

You know I have, I was up against yours at Trax this year, looking at you in my rear view mirror ;) ................

.......for a little while anyway :D:o

i didn't mean on the move mate i meant when they are launched, thats their party piece :P

but yeah powering out of corners is definitly better with them :)

It's an R32. The driver was just slow at re-acting from the startline.

I wonder what it was like in 3rd gear.

Bengie, sorry to say but when I had my 4x4 Pauls RS would frequently be ahead of me after a start...on track it was even more pronounced.

Interesting it's a k04 conversion though, is it a k04 as we know it or a different k04 from the mkI k03/s/4 brigade?... speak to Awesome :)

I always thought 4x4s were tricky to get off the line because it was too easy to bog down the motor and that the real strength was traction once you've got some forward motion (loose surface / ice notwithstanding). Frinstance you're not gonna wheel spin and FWD power understeer coming out of a tight 2nd gear turn, just plant it and go...

4wd on starts generally only comes into play if the going is slippery. 2wd, pref rear in the dry will always out run a 4wd system providing in both cars the engine has the same output due to the additional weight of the 4wd system. However if your talking high bhp figures when traction issues rears its head then a 4wd system if driven right will often outrun 2wd but remember this isnt always the case, you dont see any 4wd dragsters do you?. Also remember that most VAG 4wd cars tend to understeer as standard and run wide in corners unless you switch off the DSC or if, like me with a 105 bhp 4wd estate, it gets bogged down as the transmission zaps all the power! That said, I'll see any of you Vrs boys when it's snowing!:)

In 200-250 bhp land (hot hatch territory), it would probably be a fun competition.

In 400-450 bhp land (supercar territory), the 4WD is going to decimate the FWD.

careful what you say mark, i have been shot down in flames a few times recently for suggesting that AWD has greater traction than FWD from a standing start :nono:

where's the argument? if you check out the heyford video you'll see the difference 4x4 made between 2 mk1 octavia elegance estates, both of which were running ~200hp from jabba remaps..

There has been discussin on another thread which has gone slightly off topic but has raised some interesting points of view as to the 'off the line speed' of 4WD and 2WD cars.

It basically stemmed from this statement in the original thread regarding turbo upgrdes.

"Along with all the other possible modifications i.e. remap, exhaust, induction kit etc. you can apparantly achieve 350bhp quite easily as this short

proves. Nearside (with camera) Audi S3, middle Golf R32 and farside MkV Golf GTi with turbo conversion and other tweaks."

Hopefully we can have the relevant comments transfered to here.

There seems to be two threads running within a thread at the moment, both interesting but can we keep this one on topic and perhaps transfer all the comments regarding 4WD vs 2WD to this thread.

Could a moderator possibly transfer all the comments regarding the 4WD vs 2WD issue to this new thread please?.

Ooops, I split out the 4wd 2wd debate posts from the other thread and the order has gone to pot.

Carry on here though debating.

In 400-450 bhp land (supercar territory), the 4WD is going to decimate the FWD.

Not necessarily :D They will only be quicker in the 0-10/0-20 if at all.

C4S v CS? Carerra S wins if we are talking to 60 or above.

The 4wd does sap power and the extra weight doesn't help much either. When you are talking the 400+ bracket, there aren't many FWD cars, most are R(ight)WD. There you get the benefit of the weight transfer to the rear wheels providing more traction.

With FWD v AWD, I would put my money on AWD if we are talking similar power levels 8 times out of 10. You do get anomalies, as Colin pointed out. Mine and Paul's used to easilly beat 4x4 off the line with similar power, when we upped the power the difference grew.....

...

this is true.... remember the top gear show when it was serious about cars and Tiff Needel was there? well he put these two cars back to back and decided the 4WD version was pointless when compaired to the 2WD version... he even put them next to each other on a wet grass hill, and drove off up the hill...... no difference...

even RWD isn't perfect though, i remember watching a few saph cossie's at trax last year swaying up the 0-60 sprint not getting decent traction until pretty much finished :D

If you want to see real world proper start line technique go and watch a speed hill climb.

Dragsters are too specialised.

Half a second to be lost or gained in the first 64 feet if you **** it up.

Haven't got any results to hand for cars so I can't quote any 4WD v FWD v RWD figures.

Power/Weight factor is important, but it is more about weight distribution than simply overall weight.

If the surface is not dry the better traction of a 4WD might come in to play, otherwise my money, given equal power, would be on RWD.

I can get a 100BHP 185 Kg bike to 64 feet in around 2.10 seconds on a good day. The best I ever managed was 2.00 on a 55 bhp 170Kg bike on a really hot day.

The top ten single seater hill climb cars regularly go below 2 seconds - all RWD.
