Felicia 1.9 Diesel gearbox

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

My car is a '99 Felicia diesel estate which has developed a faulty in the gearbox. The car has only done 47K so needless to say I'm not a happy bunny!

Can anyone tell me which is the direct VW replacement for my box? I'm thinking the VW diesel Polo box will drop straight in. Right or Wrong?

Thanks in anticipation.

Charlie.

Whats the fault ? Could be a simple easy fix. Skud boxes are pretty strong unlike the new fangled stuff !

wrong!

the mounts are different, and the driveshafts have the wrong inner cv joints, plus they are teh wrong length

Ok, maybe I should rephrase, does anyone know which box from the VW group will drop straight in? This is purely so that I will have more choice when looking for a replacement box. The problem I have with mine is that a bearing has gone on 5th gear. All gears select fine and the car is perfect in the other 4 gears, but 5th is very noisy, especially under load. (I blame the wife, 108 mph mph on the M3 is a bit much!) If this a simple fix then I would like to know but as the gearbox has to come out anyway to replace a worn clutch thrust bearing I had just as well keep all my options open.

Cheers,

Charlie.

That'll be the fifth gear nut, take the end off the box at the passenger side (no need to take it out of the car) and replace the nut, £5 at the most, if you get a garage to do it you are probably looking at an hours labour. You will have to drain the gearbox oil first. In the meantime do not use fifth as eventually the gear will chew up the splines on the shaft, then you will need a new box.

there is no vw replacement to my knowledge. the felicia engine bay is not like any other.

:iagree:

On the far passenger side of the box there is a mounting to the body, this mounting is attached to the gearbox end casing. It is this end casing that needs to come off the gearbox, you will see the bolts that hold it onto the main casing. Once removed you will be able to see the fifth gear cog, from experience the collar on the nut is bent into a recess on the shaft to stop it from coming undone, this part of the collar sometimes breaks and the nut comes undone allowing the fifth gear cog to slide on the shaft, thus putting out of mesh with the other gear, resulting in quite a high pitched whine in fifth gear which increases under load.

There is no gasket between the casings so you will need to use a gasket sealer/silicone sealer to get an oil tight seal.

It is quite a straight forward job, the gearbox is filled through the speedo drive hole, but you will need to support the engine/gearbox as the left mount will have to come off.

Thanks, I will look at it as soon as I have some daylight and the car is here. You are a star!!

Thanks for your help. Problem is now solved. The nut on the end of the shaft had come undone! I have now been running the car for just over a week with no further problems.

Cheers,

Charlie.

That's good news, cheap/easy fix? Thanks for the feedback.
