vRS gearbox - same as other VAG?

Featured Replies

Anyone know if the vRS gearbox (2002) is the same as other VAG applications? or is it unique? ie anything else that could be used as a replacement donor?

come on give us a clue?? fabia or octavia?

well spotted that man! the answer is yes the gearboxes are interchangeable with the mk4 golf /bora / beetle & the audi a3 and a few others, but bear in mind that there are many different version available which all have different gear ratios/final drives etc...... the best thing to do if you are looking for a gearbox is to fing out your gearbox code and go from there..... iirc there is about 5 different gearbox codes fitted the the vrs

ah cool.. thank you!

What form does the gearbox "code" take? will that be a 3-character code similar to engines? Where will i find what i've got?

it is a 3 letter code which is in on the sticker in the first page of the service book, also under the carpet in the boot...... and if you are handy with the spanners, it's stanps onto the bottom edge of the gearbox bellhousing too.

like these then.. :)

G0C.....5-speed manual gearbox

G0E.....4-speed automatic gearbox

G0G.....5-speed manual gearbox for four-wheel drive

G0J.....5-speed manual gearbox

G0L.....6-speed manual gearbox for four-wheel drive

so does this imply either G0C or G0J for vRS then i guess?

Normally but there are some who have a 6 speed box in a 2WD octy, i know the JBS Octy has one

had a look on my detail plate - there are no G0x codes at all... ??

I guess i will be crawling underneath to have a look on the box itself :)

interested in this subject myself!!...the gearbox on my octy rs is pants.....all notchy and slack!!.....had new oil put in but to no avail!!...the car has only done

40k.The garage just say that some are just that way and theres nothing they can do about it:(....sometimes i just feel like buying a new gearbox for it....if it wasnt for the cost!!....it really affects the quality of the drive:(

i would check to make sure that the shifter on top of the gearbox hasn't worked loose, it happened on the 02T box on my fabia, and it happens all the time on the 085 series transmission units.

will check that:)...whats the technical name for the shifter thing?....just so i sound like i know when i take it to the garage!!?

cheers

iirc on ETOS/Etka it's just called a gearstift lever, they are hend onto a splined shaft by a nut, and they sometimes work loose and it's a bit like stirring a sack of **** when changing gear....

could be the perfect excuse to get a short shifter.

a5_2.JPG

they look a bit like this one

yeh but there must be a name for the nut thing?....if i go in the gararge and say its my gear shift leaver theyl just shrug their shoulders again!!:)

k:)

shriggin thier shoulders is exactly what they did when i told them(the now defunct citygate in chichester).... at that was when the car was still in waranty

as they say.... a picture is worth a thousand words......

i could of course be totally wrong and the problem might be caused by something else.

Those are optional equipment codes rather than gearbox codes. The gearbox code for my 4X4 is FEX. I believe that the 2002 vRS 5 speed box is EHA - although there may well be other codes for it too. The vehicle data sticker in the front of the car's Service Schedule lists the gearbox code directly below the model description code.

The EHA is a five speeder

Is that nut is the same as the one on a TDI and if so would make it seem like the synchromesh was knackered if it was to come loose? Eg awful gear changes?

If so don't suppose you know what torque to do it up to do you?

yeah, it can also make it jump out of first gear when pulling away too!

torque setting is f-ing tight!!!! but dont kill it! iirc it's a self locking nyloc anyway but because of the constant heating/coolint cyles they work a litle loose, the one on my 2.0 fabia was so loose that the shifter had worn down the spline, but skoda diagnosed the problem as "no fault found"

ah the shoulder hex nut!!:)....will bring it to their attention when i take it in for its service!!....on another note when is the cam belt due to be done?

cheers

Pops out and sometimes only half engages...

I'll be looking at this tonight and doing it hand tight if needs be then.

i've got 20nM listed for that here but i think that may be innacurate
