Any probs with TDI 100 lump?

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I`m looking at buying a new Fabia Combi TDI 100.

I was wondering if there is anything regarding the TDI lump i should know about?

Also considering a new 307 Estate 1.6 HDI, drives nice, but worried about the stability of the car.

Like the TDI more than the HDI, it feels like it has more raw power.

BTW: In Denmark the Fabia Combi TDI100 in Ambiente trim costs -

bloody hell that's expensive!

think the PD100 is just about indestructable... one member has run his to about 60k with a dragon box (130 bhp ish) and it's done no harm, a driving instructor has a 'surprisingly' fast PD100 with pleantly of miles on, and no real problems ;)

The tax system in Denmark is such that a new car gets taxed at a very high level, IIRC it was 200% tax on new cars, no clue on old ones though.

A lot of taxi drivers purchase their cars in Germany, drive them for a while and then sell them at what they paid for it as it's excempt.

At least that's what I got told at the time :D

Really well built engine, tunes well and seems to last

Sounds good regarding the engines stability.

It will probably get a remap, but not until the warranty has expired. ;)

Regarding the tax in Denmark it is 180% on white plate cars.

Then we have yellow plate cars, they don`t have backseats, and the tax is 60% IIRC. The 307 i was looking at was on yellow plates.

And yes, the tax system on cars is ****ed up!!

What can you do about it? - nothing. :thumbdwn:

Mine's done 93000 miles, it's a bit noisy in the mornings occasionally, but what diesel isnt? :) Good choice by the way. ;)

Mine's just about to hit 27,000 miles with no problems (apart from the fuel filler flap release going wiggy briefly).

my brothers just chopped his in for a VRS , never had a problem with it in 35k miles , and it did 60+ mpg all day long

Seems to be a good engine.

I have now written an e-mail to my bank, to hear if they wanna loan me some money. :D Shouldn`t be a problem, but you never know.

If all goes after plan, i think i will order a Storm Blue Fabia this upcomming week.

Running the PD100 in the heavier golf MKIV its hit 120000 miles no problems yet!

Done 50k miles with mine. Didn't have any problems up to last week when my ecu died and i suppose it's because of a bad chip tuning(remap). Fixed it for 120 euros and it's ok now.

I just found it wasn't quite tuneable enough for my standards, so whipped it out and pd130'd the car. However, for the 18 months in this car, and the 3 years in the previous fabia, the pd100 was a rock solid motor that I put around 100,000 miles on in that time.

I reckon this engine is solid enough to consider as a good second-hand buy. I got mine at 60k for a nice price which included a cambelt change.

My 2 mates have just bought a Passat estate and an Octy estate each with the 1.9tdi motor and BOTH have done over 150k miles. Neither burn oil and both sound very sweet (for a derv).

Save on the tax ... buy one with a few miles on the clock.

I'd agree with everyone so far that the PD100 "lump" is sound, mine's done 54,000 miles and the only issues I've had are just the usual Fabia ones (none of which was to do with the engine). I'd also say that there is a very useful load of extra power & torque to be had by remapping the ECU .

Yep, pretty bullet proof engine. I haven't even heard of a clutch or turbo failure on a standard one either!

Are all Fabia Tdi's the PD TDI 100 PS engine , or did some of the earlier cars have the non PD 90 or 100 PS engines?

Oooh - forgot to mention; despite driving fairly spiritedly (not over the speed limit, but up to it briskly) I average about 60mpg - calculated, not indicated.

I have checked the 2. hand market, and I could save $2-3K on a 1,5-2 year old with 20K miles on the clock. :thumbdwn:

Then I would rather buy a new one. :P

They are all the PD 100 engine. There isnt a on PD TDI with 100PS. Just 90PS and 110PS. The old 110 has less torque than the PD100; The power of pump duse!

Sorry to disillusion you, but my PD100 is totally standard and the turbo failed a while ago (I think it was 110K or thereabouts). :(

It has much to do with how you drive it. If you change gears at 2000 rpms it is more likely to blow faster.

to be honest 110k for a turbo isn't bad... I wouldn't consider it a fault, just the natural life of a turbo!

I actually forgot the turbo packed up on my pd100 on about 20,000 miles, on the first fabia, which was way before my Briskoda time started. Sorted under warranty though. That's the only serious pd100 component failure I've had, and you could argue the turbo is not part of the "lump" - To me "lump" is just failures with rods, pistons, head gaskets, camshaft, injectors, crankshaft etc etc. i.e. problems with block, head and everything inside them.

Any idea why that is? Do you mean shifting up or down at 2k rpm? If I am not in a hurry I quite often shift up to the next gear at around 2k rpm. Keeps the car nice and quiet.

Michael

The PD100 engine was about the only reliable part of my Fabia :rofl::rofl:
