Your favourite photo?

Featured Replies

As above just wondering what your favourite photo is that you've taken?

Mine up to now, not actually taken many but since owning my Nikon D50 it has to be either of the below:

DSC_0091.jpg

or

DSC_0113.jpg

Not the greatest but I haven't really learnt how to use the camera yet so still experimenting.

Photobucket kind of ruins the first but you get the drift.

Cheers

Very nice Chris - particularly the one of the abbey/church. Did you use any post production techniques and/or filters for that one?

Hi Steve

I did a lot of post processing to get that one. Taken with a Minolta A1 in RAW, converted with the contrast and dynamic range maximised and colour saturation quite high to get an over strong looking image. Next stage was to use the colour replacer in photoshop to work through and convert the greenery to a light colour for the infra red look, also exagerrated much of the contrast in the masonary the same way. Last stages were done with a duotone conversion, which gave the opportunity to take the sky much darker, then further contrast adjustments.

I have almost never used filters with the digital gear, a circular polariser occasionally and that is it. Location was Baconsthorpe in Norfolk, just out for a blast around and stumbled across this. Heres more photoshop trickery:

Hi Chris

Airgun shooting is still very popular. The Hunter FT comps regularly have to turn people away. Field Target is still going strong' date=' and the European countries are catching up quickly.

Here is my club

Used to do a fair bit of that. Used to shoot at ETL. Dont have time these days but used to get a few trophys a year. Is the winter league still going?

Chris

SEFTA winter league started about a month ago. I've shot many times at ETL, some good courses.

Loved all the photos, especially Chris GB and Scuff. I

Loved all the photos, especially Chris GB and Scuff. I’m trying to improve my skills and am trying to get the shot to look right first and then if I ever get the hang of it, will look to getting to grips with Photoshop properly. Obviously you guys have cracked both those things, so if you could give one bit of advice to a novice, what would it be?

Always carry a camera.

Take loads of shots

Learn the technicalities of your camera

Learn the technicalities of exposure

Learn the technicalities of composition

Form your own style

Take pictires of boring subjects and try and find a way of making it interesting

post processing - mmmmmm, a subject all of its own.

Finally - enjoy enjoy enjoy. I still do even after 30 years:eek:

Thanks for the compliment. As already stated, know the basics, key being exposure. I used to work in medium format a lot, so take the view that the two techniques you can use are very different. Taking a shed load of images of everything (or spray and pray as I call it) is one approach that can yield good work. Personally I would say that if I am taking a photo, I always visualise how I want the finished article to look before pressing the shutter button. Once you get into post processing, consider that when making the exposure as well. What do I want the finished article to look like? Unlike spray and pray, you will learn to consider much more about the creative process by doing this.

Plan for the light. You may see something that will look OK, but would look 10 times better when the light suits it. Go back and get it at the right time.

Early morning light is my favourite.

Start a little black book. Write down ideas as you think of them and make notes of possible locations as you spot them.

RAW gives you more scope to pull shadow and highlight detail and apply contrast and exposure adjustments without coming up against JPEG artifacts like tonal banding.

Patience. If the light will be OK in a little while, wait for it.

Rules of framing (like the rule of thirds) are a good start, but remeber you dont have to follow the rules. Again, visualise the way a shot will work. What will lend it that three dimensional quality that draws the eye in? What will help capture the essence of what you are trying to convey?

Remember you can use photography to abstract and create. The first one above was taken on a quite busy afternoon in Maldon. The atmosphere was nothing like the intended image conveys.

Try a few photographic online communities. Digital Photography Now has a small but very friendly forum. Also try Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ though the Canon forum there can be a bit up 'emselves.

Dont only think of the scene as you generally see it. Consider texture and the scale of things. Look for interesting patterns in large areas and think macro for its textures. Play around with scale.

Humour can work a treat as can the occasionally spotted oddball pic:

Odd_scales.jpg

If I had to pick just one tip, it would be to visualise what you want the end result to look like before pressing the shutter button.

Chris

I've not really used my camera in anger except when we were on honeymoon. Here are some of my favorites:

I'd've included these two, were it not for them being slightly out-of-focus and suffering from major phase shift in the case of the leopard. But hey, you can't have it all from a GBP200 camera!

Whats phase shift? Looks fine to me
