Drive shaft or diff

Featured Replies

Hi there, last job i did on the (now seperrated:confused: ) Mrs's. 1.6i Felicia was the rear brakes - new shoes, cylinders and one pipe.

Two days ago it was a front tyre change, and today......... the drive shaft I've been advising her to change for two months. Typically, she has the new CV joint in the car and it's goint to the garage today, but theres always the last little journey. This ended in disaster, i.e. NO drive. I had a look under and asked for it to be put in reverse and feed in the clutch. No movement in the drive shaft, just a slipping/graunching from the diff on the off-side, could be D/shaft splines, could be diff gears.

Anyone had this problem, and fixed it, or had it fixed?

Thanks for any feedback, regards Urco

Inner CV joint gone instead of outer? That would mean the shaft its self wouldnt turn at all. I would still expect to see the stub of the drive shaft next to the gearbox turning whilst the shaft itself wasnt if that was the case.

Ive never heard of the splines being damaged during use like that only during fitting \ removal. The diff is a possibility, Ive never had one go on a skoda, but wouldnt say it was impossible, but my first suspect would be the inner joints.

Being as its the more torquey 1.6 which ive not had much to do with that could put more stress on other components that im not used to going.

when you remove the direvshafts you have to insert a special tool to stop the sun gear inside the gearbox from dropping into the gearbox, but to be honest you normally only need to do this when both shafts are removed at the same time....

on the other hand to diff pins might have moved and allowed the planetary gears to move... this normally manifests itseft as a loud clicking sound for a while (whilst the pin wears a groove into the transmission casing, the all of a sudden one day "pop" the diff explodes when you are on the motorway

as a matter of interest, are you doing this with one of the shafts out??

Thanks, for your feedback and you are correct, the inner joint and outer joint were, to use a technical term, both F-hooked. While kneeling on the wet road with a torch, close inspection was not vital.I did not do the job myself [ We recently seperrated, hours after I fixed the brakes I received a solicitors letter, asking me to cough up half our house value, so no motive to save on car repairs, let my mates outfit do it, not bitter, it's Karma]

He changed the drive shaft in 50 minutes, I was there, hopefiully thats it, will let you all know if theres any other faults. Urco
