Removal of Red Hat Linux

Featured Replies

Aqquired a PC that has red hat linux on it and want to install win98 on it instead (do ask).

Anyone any ideas how to do it as I'm stuck.

Format drive :)

Setup Bios to boot from CD.

Insert Windows 98 CD-ROM.

Please any key to boot from CD.

axe? large hammer?

or you could try using a Windows 98 boot disk? give it a quick google to find one :)

First question is why win 98 (you said to ask)

Second thing is to download any linux at all (ubuntu is free) and burn it to a CD.

Go into the install process and delete all partitions on the drive when it asks you how you would like to partition the disk.

Go to the next step and then reboot the PC now without partitions.

Otherwise if you don't want to download it just use the following command:

- Press Ctrl + Alt + F1 to get to a console only login (makes life easier)

- Log in as root

fdisk /dev/hda

go through the options to delete all partitions and save and exit the tool.

There is a pretty good chance the PC might now hang, but you will again have no partitions on the system.

reboot system and install the OS of your choice.

Lat i tried that it won't work. Win 98 will have major kittens as it's built in fdisk tool has no idea what the hell the ext3 partitions are.

Fair enough. Thought my answer was too easy.

I had to do a similar thing today but I just rebuilt the raid array.

Try with a windows ME startup disk, or use an XP setup cdrom and delete the partitions in that.

If the HD is larger than 2GB then you will have problems with 98 unless its the 98SE version.

I'm not sure about XP, but i didn't think win ME could cope with ext2/3 partitions either as the win 98 fdisk tool refuses to delete them even when you tell it to delete non windows partitions.

Cheers guys I now have win98 installing.

I need win 98 on it due to some light programing software I need to run not working on XP. It's a rack mounted PC so it will save me taking a laptop on the road for gigs as it is going to be mounted in the bottom of my flightcased tool chest.
