sorry, but another water/footwell question.

Featured Replies

hi guys,

I'm pretty new to the skoda thing.. only had my octavia Vrs for a few weeks now. the forum is fantastic and i've been searching alot for any little issues i've had.

The big problem i now have, is that i notices a fair bit of water in the Drivers side rear footwell, and only today i;ve noticed it in the drivers footwell too.

all the searching on the forum i've done has possible scenarios for why this may happen on the passenger side, but i've checked most things like pollen filter housing etc but to no avail. There also seems so be no noticeable way the water is getting there.

Any suggestions? i'm not much of a technical minded person, but i do need to find this problem rather than getting a garage to have a look!

any suggestions are much appreciated.

thanks in advance

Greg

It might be the same issue I have (not that mine gets as far as wet footwells!). If the door menbrain has been cut (say someone fitted some better speakers), then that can cause the water to be diverted into the car. If this was the case, then the bottom rubber seal should be obviously wet.

Otherwise - leaking windscreen seal or possibly blocked sunroof drains (does the vRS have a sunroof?)

that's the thing, there seems to be no moisture around the door seals etc at all. and there seems to be no visible point of entry around the windscreen either.

i'll keep a check on everything and see if i can trace it somehow... argh

have u checked up behind the glove box to see if there are any signs of dampness up there?

Leaves. They are a reet bugger. They clog up the air intake part under the window wiper housing and cause water to not drain correctly. Try taking a peek in there. But as mbames suggests, check behind the glove box to see if its damp (perhaps after hosing the car down a fair bit to simulate rain).

Yep water can get blocked up and end up goinng into the pollen filter houseing and into the apparantly.

I'd be checking the speakers just incase though. If you do then be aware that the speaker cover doesn't come off and you need to take the whole door card off.

I had this on a Audi A4 a while back, as suggested above it was leaves blocking the drain gully under the wipers.

As the water couldn't drain away it was collecting in a pool and as you drive around is sloshes into the vents and collects in the footwells.

A quick clear out making sure all the drain holes were clear sorted the problem, will be checking my Octy when I pick it up on Friday

Yes, in addition to this, at the rear of the front wheel arches, is the plastic wheel arch liner. If you flex this away at the bottom (near to the sill), then you will probably find some lovely mushy leaves and half a gallon of smelly water in there.

If you want to do the job properly, but undo a few of the torex screws and get a bit of better access and clean out leaves which will be in there. Also worth using a watering can (or similar) to just flush through once u have finished to ensure most leaves have removed. Don't use the water first, unless you want a wet arm :P

My old Fiesta had a similar problem.

Turned out that the exhaust water from the air conditioning was not draining out underneath the car properly and running through the floor air vents instead into the foot wells (normally the passenger side).

WOW, thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I'm off work on friday, so i'll be solely trying to find the leak! fingers crossed it is just leaves etc blocking a drain hole.... but we'll soon see!

One further question, how does the scuttle panel thing (plastic bit round the wipers) actually come off? i've pulled off the rubber seal that goes the width of the car, but the plastic bit seems to be attached to the bottom of the windscreen via a seal!?!?

thanks again

I had a leak into the drivers side footwell which was a real problem one rainy October...I worked out eventually that the seal between the windscreen and the body of the car was probably the problem. So I paid my

Scuttle panel... have a search on here.. you shoudl find some posts from me on how to get it off!

However:

1. Take wiper arms off

2. Remove the rubber seal

3. From the drivers side, lift the soft rubber edge back and look down from the windscreen side, a couple of inches in you will notice a gap about 3/4 - 1 inch long. Using a long large, flat bladed screwdrive insert into this gap.

What you actually have is a slot that runs all the way along the windscreen, and into this slot there is a lip from the scuttle panel which is gripped in it - at 90 deg to the windscreen. Therefore with your screwdriver it should be possible to gently seperate the two. I have sound that also inserting the screwdrive from the engine bayside of the panel can work as well.

Look for the double green arrows...., and lever in that gap, but try not to apply too much pressure to the edge of the glass - if you have a touch, try working from under the pannel. Once you have raised it there, it should pull out, or move with a gentle bit of screwdriver action. Repeat on other side. Once loose, what out for the windscreen wash hose. There is a junction in it about a foot in from the drivers side, that you can seperate it on. However remember to reattach when putting the thing back together - I forgot last time, but fortunately I have small hands (but it was a painful operation!!!!)

If you want to try and trace the leak then dry the car out totally then coat everywhere around the front with tissue paper.

Sit someone in the car then hose the car down with it spraying water on to simulate rain.

You should see where the tissue paper gets wet first

Hi all

Been a while since my last post

I too noticed a problem with my Octavia estate 2.0 petrol shortly after buying (secondhand) from Skoda dealer in Cardiff. Turned out that a seal/weld on the bulkhead chassis had not been completed during the build somewhere up behind the dashboard. The garage stripped the inside of the car and showered it with water to find the hole. Thankfully they found it!!

Hope you manage to sort it.

I found half a garden when I checked mine, I dug out several handfuls of soil and leaves on each side, crazy! Ill have to pop out that screw and do it properly soon :o
