Is this legal?

As previously stated elsewhere, Santa is bringing me a Plusdeck 2C full logic cassette deck for my PC.

It plugs into a standard 5 1/2" drive bay and alloys me to play audio cassettes thru it and convert them to MP3.

I have around 100 cassettes from my childhood so I will be able to revive a lot of my old collection that I no longer listen to.

THE LEGAL BIT - I was going to start up a wee side company, make it a subsidiary of my wife's new childminding business and offer the service to Joe Public.

Sorry, but this would be NOT ok and could prove very expensive if it were done.

A person (or company) would need the consent of the original company, licences agreed and residual fees likely for artists/performers.

I wouldn't suggest you touch this with a barge pole.

Although you can do this in other countries, I dont believe "backup" is actually legal in the UK, there is debate about legalising this at the moment as Ipod owners regularly break the law ripping hteir own cd's! But to offer the service on a commercial basis would be asking for trouble.

Technically this would be illegal , even if your customers were supplying original cassettes that they owned

Looks like i'll have to wait for a change in the law then (hopefully)

Yes, illegal except if they are tapes created by the copyright owners.

I only have 1 tape (Eagles) and that is in the car

I think the last cassette I used was Chaka Demus and Pliers in my MS 402 head unit before I swapped to the 80Gb hard drive! :D Oooh, how times have changed.
