1.8T Timing belt change

Featured Replies

Hi peeps, my timing belt and ancillaries (pulleys/waterpump) are due to be changed. Ive contacted Alex Laurie in Liverpool regarding this and they quoted just under

Jabbasport do it for £250. Check their website...

I recently had the cambelt done alongside my 80,000 mile service and paid £490 in VAT at Alex Lawrie they told me the waterpump was fine, the cars on variable servicing now so doesnt need to be done again until 100,000 miles.

I was impressed with their service and was offered a hire car for the day for no extra, I dont doubt this isnt the cheapest but I was happy with the result.

I test drove the Fabia VRS whilst I was there to pick my Octavia up and what can I say I LIKE IT!

Mmmmm no problem with the water pumps eh? Tell them to look on here.

These people know more than that dealer you spoke to.Dont even entertain going anywhere near someone who thinks you will not need a new water pump. They sound a bit dodgy , as I know for a FACT there are issues

There are not always issues. My previous vRS had the plastic pump and wasn't replaced when the cambelt was changed at 70K miles. And when I sold it with 130K, it was still fine.

Ah, Jabbasport isnt exactly close so Id prefer to do it local (its approx 200~ miles away), slightly far to get that sorted.

I think their spin on it was - basically if you want to we can replace it but there have been no known issues with the plastic ones breaking up.

I know my local Skoda dealer won't fit parts that you supply, only stuff that they do themselves.

Just thought it would be worth asking the dealer if they will fit the metal type water pump that you supply to them.

Not had any problems with Alex Lawrie fitting or removing any parts I have supplied.

Is the metal version an offical SUK part or aftermarket?

Not sure, anyone have any clues? And where would be the best place to get it?

As far as i am aware the metal impeller water pumps are aftermarket as VAG still use and supply only the plastic ones.

Hi

I'm new to the site but have been reading your messages for a while now. I bought a 2002 Octavia 1.8T Elegance Estate 3 months ago with 71k and full Skoda history. After reading your messages on here I looked into getting the cambelt changed. I contacted my local dealer and a local Skoda specialist, both had never heard of problems with the water pump! They wouldn't even fit a water pump supplied by me, only genuine Skoda parts which I presume would be a plastic one. After finally speaking to someone who knew what they were on about, ie: German and Swedish at Leeds, I got the cambelt kit and water pump with a brass impellor for

Thanks for the reply there, most helpful.

Just reviving this one a little, a local specialist has quoted £200+vat for the lot fitted using GSF parts, are these as good as OE (ie Skoda ones?)

I've always used them and never had a problem right back to the days of running Mk1 and Mk2 golfs! They are a big player around the ClubGTI scene. Always found them very helpful too.

Well I went to Alex Lawrie in the end, full belt/rollers/tensioner and waterpump/coolant for £280 inc, not a bad price all told!

I got the belt, tensioner kit and water pump from German, Swedish and French for £60 and paid my brother £30 to fit. Took him 2hrs and saved me £210 from the dealer price. I can PM the instructions for cam-belt changes to anyone interested for pretty much any car

Thats good but I want to keep the service history going on the car.

£60 also for the entire cambelt kit and waterpump? Seems very cheap..

Think we might be getting mixed up here between a diesel engine and the 20V turbo petrol engine!

Here's a breakdown of what I paid from German & Swedish:-

Cambelt kit (belt & rollers) - £55.81

Water pump - £25.26

Cambelt tensioner damper - £56.99

My mechanic quoted me 2 1/2 hours @ £30 per hour, so I paid him £80 although he did say that it took him longer!
