odd clunk after new front disks/pads

Featured Replies

i've noticed that whenever i put the anchors on, there's a very subdued "clunk" from somewhere under the car. it's just had new front disks and pads and i was planning on taking it back, but anyone any suggestions what this might be due to? brakes working fine so far. it only does it the first time you touch the pedal, then won't do it again if you press it straight afterwards, you need to move forward a little first.

odd, but wouldn't mind opinions on likely cause...

fogotten to put a shim on the back of the pads maybe?

Probably because the anti-rattle springs are missing or incorrectly fitted. You didn't specify front or rear, but the front Teves calipers have a long wire spring which you can see through the wheel. The rears are a Girling design with the anti-rattle springs pivoted on the pad backplate. It's possible for a moron to assemble these with one spring end poking through the caliper "window" - I've seen this.

I hope nothing has been left loose - the Teves front sliders need a 7mm hex key to tighten them and the rears are M8 bolts. These should be renewed at each pad change (new ones come in the kit if you buy the OE pads) and are coated with blue locking compound.

Investigate carefully and don't take chances with brakes.

rotodiesel.

were genuine pads fitted ?

sometimes the pads can be slightly smaller in the carrier , therefore they can move very slightly when the brake is applied initially

a dab of copper slip on the pad edge may cure this

How long have they been fitted? Maybe give it a little more time, and see if anything changes, might just be some debris?

fronts, been on 2 weeks. missus about to go in to labour [panic!] any second so not had chance to get them checked out. will do asap. antirattle springs sound a likely candidate...

Hi, I had the same problem on a Vectra (yes i know but we all have our daft moments!) turn out to be the small 6mm locating screw missing, even though the disc's are in effect held on with the 5 wheel bolts the 6mm screw stops them slipping behind the wheel, when i replaced the screw it stopped the knocking instantly, hope this helps
