Had one of these off eBay

eBay.co.uk: Retrofit Kit for Cruise Control VW Golf & Bora TDI PD (item 180033243833 end time 26-Dec-06 22:12:55 GMT)

I was told it was the CC kit....arrived and it seems to be perfect - the right kit etc.

Fitted MOST of it today (the cold weather not really helping on the extremities mind)

The only real tough bits so far have been:-

*removal of the cable going to the wiper motor (too restrictive to remove while the whole lot is in place, but a bitch when the whole assembly is loosened)

*Airbag - do I go for the blue wire or the red wire lol. Actually not that bad, its just the the firing "wire" direct to the airbag doesn't want to be messed with unless you are prepared for it (which I wasnt). So its like a man with a bomb in his hands, but no dearming tools

The brown wire that is extraneous is easy enough to dis-connect (attached to the loom of the firing mechanism) but the black earth is a bitch, and needs a

bit of leverage out of the wheel. This is the bit I almost bottled out of, purely for the fact that I was fiddlying about with wires that are connected to an "active" airbag (battery long disconnected tho)

I have the wiper mechanism out the way, I have the steering side pretty much sorted and wire layed along to the electrics box but still have to terminate the actual connections. 70% there though.

However it also seems the loom may be the "wrong" one anyway, and the instructions specific to the "VW". So much for DIY...:> Thanks VRStu for guiding me the "right" direction !

Anyone know where I can get the other parts needed close to Northamptonshire - it seems I now need T6Y and might need some other crimping stuff....even better if anyone wanted to pass down and help I would be very obliging to get you a beer or two ( or pack of :>)

As I said in the email that kit will be fine if you follow the guide

Fabia-vrs.com - Cruise Control Retrofit Guide

It's not the way I do it but it will work. Oh and there is no need to remove any wires from the airbag except the yellow plug. Put your wipers back on, no need to take those out at all either.

On top of the parts you have you need -

Connector 6Q0 937 702A

5 x Wires 000 979 131

4 x Inline crimps

Black insulation tape

A selection of cable ties

Approximately 3 meters of 0.35mm fine wire (White sheathed if possible)

To be honest I'd much sooner you straighten it all out for me at cost, but I got myself in this stupid mess so I guess I'll get myself out!

PS the 6Q0 - that's the brown plug that takes the modified loom of the CC loom per your instructions right ?

Yes, Connector 6Q0 937 702A is T6y

I think I have a better feel for it now!

I have got the kit coming from the Skoda side, as point of comparison (this is the BEA 400 002 kit, which will have the pre-terminated connectors for the XS-3 socket).

I might just stick the other loom 1J0 with my other stalk on fleabay.

Wipers off is a bit futil, agreed - however I would argue it HAS enabled me to understand where the terminations from the ECU come from !!

The difficult part would be to actually get to the opposite end of this on the INSIDE of the car (this is the intended method, I would assume from Skoda)

This is on the Wiring Diagram as T11a, pin 10 but in actuality may be something different on the newer models.

I think the "White" wire is on Pin K6.....

I would imagine one could preserve ones warranty EVEN by just taking the cable out at this end, use a similar termination mechanism as supplied on the brake feed, and run this cable around into the drivers bay (if doing the modded instructions, this would go into the connector with the other Black/Yellow crimped wires into XS-3).

This would be better than cutting into the existing loom.....

I don't think the loom is the important equation here but I will get a stock one for comparison (only £50 odd pounds).

The 1J0 loom and 8Q0 stalk can always hit eBay (or to anyone here for a reasonable price?)

That said I still don't think the LOOM itself is the big thing...this 1J0 loom contains four wires plus the brake wire for power.

(Rd/Yl, White, Blue, Yl/Blx2 (into one termination).

Yes, and I would definitely need that connector brown terminated t6y to get any further with the existing loom anyway, plus a whole lot of wires.

Yes, but that has 6 days to go (6 Tage 5 Stunden).....

I'd be amazed if it stays at "1 Groat" :o) !

I am sure you got a bargain mind :o) Don't spoil my day by telling me how much....

I have to say, this is a bitch of a job really - not the basic wiring into the ECU mind, if you have the balls to get the airbag off, its the actual getting to the right connector on the bulkhead (if you want to keep your warranty).

If VRStu actually takes it all the way to the Firewall, I would say its worth the amount he charges.

Update: I have ordered the "blank" socket and the "wires" for the socket.

Thats not to say I am going to do it straight away, I just felt it better to leave the existing harness in place and get the car back together (so that I can use it!).

If VRStu actually takes it all the way to the Firewall, I would say its worth £160 of anyone's money.

Tony, the hardest part (other than installing the cruise stalk) is running that extra wire from the ECU through the firewall and along the back of the heater unit to the connector block under the drivers footwell, once you've done that and with the correct connector (which I see you've ordered) it's fairly simple to connect up.

And by the way, I did the same as you in that I had installed everything but did not have the plug & wires to connect into socket XS3 so I had to put it all back together and run around for a few days with the wires tucked up under the drivers footwell until the plug arrived and I could finish the job !

Stick with it though ... it's worth it

Oh ! and the parts I got on ebay.de without actually tellng you how much were indeed a complete bargain ! :D

Question, do you know whether its possible to unclip the connection going into the firewall at position K6 on my car at the engine side? This might facilitate to plug in some kind of loom extension, WITHOUT cutting up the existing wiring.

I am sure its better to go in from the dash side....but it looks like a ball ache I am just not prepared for. It almost looks easier to take it along the loom underneath the wipers mechanism, in at the passenger end and back in !

It almost looks like you might be able to unbolt the firewall connections from the outside and drop it in for better light and clearance etc, but I didn't bother.

I imagined it might be possible to unclip from its connector from the exterior side, but didn't have an unclipping tool and was just wasting time with paperclips etc....its quite possible it requires the full dash dismantling rather than just the lower dash....and I just can't be arsed with that right now.

I guess harder to pick up on warranty would be if you spliced into it here...I am not quite up to actioning either possibilities quite yet anyway, think I'll take a break from it, nowing that its "nearly" activated with cruise lol.

To be honest I am starting to see justification as to why the stealers want circa £300 for it - its a busy job thats for sure.
