Rear windscreen washers not working

Featured Replies

Turned out to be the jets both blocked - found the ideal unblocking tool - an old brass paraffin blowlamp jet pricker (Yes its a strangely named tool but I believe thats the correct name).

Surprisingly the blockage seemed to be caused by a plug of what looks like rust - admittedly the rear washer doesn't get used all that often - but since the car is only about 18 months old this unnerves me a bit.

The washers work now better than they ever did before, so I wonder if one jet was blocked from new ?

Anybody else had this ?

mines done the same

i can hear the motor when i pull the switch and the bottles full but no joy

where do i get my hands on one of these ?????

Richard, have you checked that the boot isn't damp. Specifically have a look under the carpet.

It isn't uncommon for the rear pipe to pop off and soak the floor. If you can hear the motor I would suggest your boot is filling up with washer fluid :(

A trip to the dealer will have this fixed.

If you lift the rear wiper you can unclip the plastic cover by pulling the sides apart and lifting off - this exposes the stainless steel jets - a piece of thin stiff wire (only about a quarter of an inch needs to enter ) worked in and out of the jets will loosen the blockage and you shoud be able to flush it out. Finding the appropriate wire is the problem.

Anyone having trouble finding wire, ask your friendly neighbourhood dentist (!) for a few inches each of various thicknesses of stainless steel orthodontic wire.

I'll echo the comment about checking for dampness in the boot. Mine came unclipped three times and each time Skoda put it back on and insisted that I MUST use VAG approved washer fluid or they wouldn't repair it again. They say that minerals in the water crystalize inside the washer jet and cause a blockage. The subsequent blockage causes the pipe to break at its joint.
