Which engine to choose, 1.2 64hp or 1.4 80hp for a new fabia estate?

Featured Replies

Hi u all, i wonder if some one could help me in my decision wether to have an 1.2 64hp or an 1.4 80hp to my new Fabia estate.

I have heard and read so much "info" where people claims the other to be the better, with out giving a better explanation why its that way. So now i have turned to the biggest site on the net for skoda people :)

This is what i know of each engine ;)

1.2 has 64hp and is made of aluminium, is a bit noisy and has a cam chain. And that almost every one claims to be the best one.

1.4 has 80hp and is made of iron and is more quiet and has a cambelt, but (salesman claims it has an camchain)

The new car will mostly transport me and my fiance, but soon also our baby, baby trolley and lots of dipers and foodbags ;)

And since i now own an Ford Siesta 1.1 50hp wich gets an heart attack on every slope ;)

The 1.2 engine feels a bit weak.

Id be very thankfull for all of u wich can give some info of the engines and what they actually are made of and wich are the better one and why.

And of course ill be in death for all of u for all help (if i get some) and will stay as a member of this great site ( i have already read almost every page ) ;)

And of course show some pics of the car due time and upgrade.

Best regards // John

As a 1.2 owner... I can vouch for how solid the little 1.2 lump is... will leave you with no illusion that it is fast... because quite simply, it isn't! But it does tug well and ca be almost compared the characteristics o a small diesel engine as it has its torque low down.

I for one would certianly never ever call the 1.2 noisy... its the very reason all my friends nick named my car as '12 Volts' (being a 1.2 12v) as it was so extremly quiet.

I can't honestly comment on the 1.4 as I have abslutly no expreriance of it. But vote for the little 1.2 lump from me as long as your in no rush to get to places fast.

Saying that although the acceleration isn't all there.. when it does do motorways it doenst suffer in the least, and mine is/was very happy with hills even with air con on.

Good luck with your choice, whichever you chse, the fabia is a cracker of a car

I love the 1.2 engine too... I found the 1.4 quite underwhelming.

I know its not your question, but is a pd100 diesel too far from your budget?

To answer your question the 1.2 htp is the better engine than the 1.4 to be honest.

Try the diesel though you will be surprised

Drive both and make your own mind up. I've not driven the 1.4 but found the 1.2 absolute crap compared to SWMBOs 1.3 Getz.

I love the (lack of) noise the 1,2 makes. My own 1,9 PD is a bit of tractor.

The tdi would be my choice tbh.

Thanx all, so far it seems to weigh over for a 1.2, think ill have to go for an test drive of an 1.2 also.

A diesel is slightly more expensive and the new road taxes doesent make it a better choice. As for the 1.4/1.2 petrol i would get a very low road tax as 1200 sek

Fell free to post more of your thoughts....ill want to hear more plus and cons.

Ps, my fiesta sounds like an old diesel mercedes.....tak,tak,tak....so everything new is quieter than that ;)

The 1.2 estate was the car I had a test drive before buying the hatchback version but If I was having an estate I dont think I would have such a small engine especially if you are going to lug a lot of heavy gear around or towing trailers. Richard has sumed it up really, you will find the engine sound quite distinctive when accelerating but its nothing too bad and at constant speeds its nice. My own experience of the 1.2 is that it has excellent economy and performance for what I need. If you have a heavy right foot and want to accelerate in nanoseconds you wont like it.

Reece, i also think that an 1.2 for an estate wont be enough since it will be full packed sometimes and i want to be sure there is power enough when needed.

Also heavy gasfoot isnt me but there is times when i need speed ;)

Aah, i missed a part in Richards writing ;)

Thanx again ;)

would the 1.4 TDI not be cheap road tax? I agree that a 1.2 estate would struggle when fully loaded. It weights around 1200Kgs unladen. Thats alot for a very small engine to lug about.

The tdi would be my choice tbh.

And mine. The 1.4TDi is a cracker. We had a Polo with one.

If i did understand the road taxes correct here in sweden it would be more expensive with an diesel and it also cost more than i can afford right now, unfortunetly.

But with the 1.4 engine it would be 1200 skr and it would consume almost the same amount as my current ford fiasco.

Well, if you have to choose between the 1.2 and 1.4 petrol. I'd go for the 1.4 petrol just based on the numbers. It may not feel as sprightly as the 1.2, but it will be better at over taking and load lugging. which is what really matters at the end of the day.
