Blanking off EGR valve(s)

Featured Replies

I'm fairly new to PDs

Who can teach me about blanking off the EGR valve?

How long before Jason arrives???

Jason aka devonutopia will probably be able to help.

Think it depends on the year of your car but just disconnecting the vac hose to the EGR valve and plugging it works fine. On the later models this will bring on the check engine light on the dash. I think on the later ones you have to have it turned to its minimum setting with vag com.

Calling Jason!

Jason? :D

Basically, you order the Allard EGR replacing race pipe, complete with EGR blocking off plate. Remove EGR assembly from inlet manifold and replace with straight pipe. Remove feed pipe to EGR from exhaust and blank off with plate and a couple of bolts. (supplied with kit) - You're left with this (below) eventually.

And if you don't want to get your hands dirty, you can just turn it down (to practically nothing) via VAG-COM :D

Chris

What does disabling/turning off the EGR do?

Stops the inlet manifold caking up with black sludge over time, and helps the engine. You know that soot that comes out the exhaust? Well, the EGR is taking some of that, and putting it through the engine again. I'd rather it burned 100% clean air, just the once.....

Some info on what EGR's do and how is here :D

Chris

Is there anything wikipedia hasn't got info on? :D

If there is I've yet to find it (or should that be not find it  )

Chris

I have mine turned down to the minimum setting for about 35,000 miles now with VAG-COM and it's perfect.

Better idle, smoother revving and no **** going through the engine. Also, it takes about a minute with VAG-COM. It is turned down to such a setting it has either no effect/practically none but with the added feature of no lights on the dashboard and no blanking plates etc required.

Most tuners will do this for you when you get the car remapped.

You'll have no issues with emissions come MOT time either :)

HTH, Chris.
