Does your Octavia suffer badly in cross winds?

Featured Replies

Reason I ask, is I just had a really quite worrying journey over the M62 from Manchester to Leeds this morning, and at stages I had to slow down to 50, just to manage to go in a straight line.

Car was also struggling to go where I wanted it on the M56 from Chester to Manchester last week.

All other cars seem fine and wizz past me at normal motorway speeds, but I have to hack it with the lorries, at about 50mph.

Everyone I ask seems to think I'm making it up, but I'm having real confidence problems in how my vRS is handling. It's just nowhere near as secure as it used to be. Thought about tracking, but seems fine on a flat road when I take my hands off the round.

Last two things I have had done, is had to fit the spare wheel to the front, and second I had new rear brake pads fitted. Could be that rear brake pads are rubbing.

Help please, because if is not the car, it must be me loosing my bottle!!

No problem with my vRS estate but I was going in the opposite direction on

the M62. Might have been my back draught kocking you about!

Is the spare full size? Have you checked the tyre pressures?

I noticed the wind today but it didn't slow me down.

The spare is full size, and I've managed to do over 500 miles on it before I noticed anything.

I usually notice the wind, but like you say it doesn't normally slow me down, not even 10 years ago when I drove a B Reg 950 Fiesta.

Must be something actually wrong with the car. Although first thing I did check was tyre pressures.

It has been very windy though and there's been a few accidents on the M62 over the last few days because of it.

Travelling up to York a few weeks ago...same problem.Think it was a very exposed section though.

Certainly worrying when you are suddenly taken towards another lane!!

I notice the wind more in my Octy than I do in my Puma.... and that's despite the fact that the Octy is bigger and heavier!

Generally do slow down a bit, but never needed to drop to 50 - apart from on Sunday evening heading north up the M6 when everyone else was doin 50 as well lol

I get the same, the front wheels seem to want to go into another lane and then you get all the fun.

When it gets windy I find myself having to slow down to keep in lane.

I find it's the same - the Octy is very "slab sided", so tends to catch cross-winds. Still, it's even more fun going over the M62 in a smart which is about a third of the weight and even less aerodynamic... :D

Rob.

Odd that vRSLen and myself both have estates and haven't really experienced problems as you'd expect estates to be worse.

Although I've only had it just over a week, I don't seem to feel the wind much either, and mines an estate as well

In a way yes, but if the effect is caused by the turbulence on the "non-wind" side of the vehicle rather than just the wind buffeting it then the shape of the estate might make the turbulence more "regular" along the length of the car.

Or I might be talking c**p (again)...

Rob.

in a nutshell yes but i think it add's an element of surprise to a drive

i drove cardiff to york 2wks ago and on the way back it was like sailing the high seas didn't slow me down much but fuel use was higher

i don't remember my other cars being as bad as my vrs

but hey it is a skoda after all !!!

I found the standing water more of a problem on Monday on the M62.

The front air dam on my car sits quite low also, that might help.

Being a biker I get used to being blown about so it might not be such a

concern for me. If I do find it concerting I generally go a bit faster :)

Octy's Ive never had an issue with wind wise. very stable and competent car IMO.

Felicia on the other hand....

Another estate owner here.

It's not as good as my old Xantia was, but it's not an issue I'm actually bothered about, despite having had a few runs in gale or severe gale conditions the last few weeks.

Just done York to Leeds and back tonight, and thinking that the problem is being exagerated by the tracking being out, leading me to over compensate for the wind.

Going to get the tracking done, before I head back over the M62 to Manchester tomorrow.

I've just done a leeds to york and back trip as well. Doing up to a tonne and no problems

I've been getting blown about in my Mk1 Octy hatch these past few weeks. Was worried my tracking was out again - has only been about 12k and 8 months since it was last done. Really saps your confidence if you can't keep it in a straight line :(

i must that road between york and leeds (don't know whats its called a? and m?)

is windy as hell its kinda high up

Would this be symptomatic of worn suspension bushes introducing some compliance steer?

Nah the A64 is low but whinedy.... your think of the M62 between manchester and leeds that has loads of v high bits going over the penines

My Superb used to suffer quite badly from this from new, so cant have been bushes or anything really, It never slowed me down but even on a still day, if you pass a lorry on the motorway, when you get to the cab it used to be a struggle to hold it on the same line.

My new Mondeo does not suffer at all, but that may be due it having the sports suspension?

Mine neither on non-sports suspension :D
