Service 1000 miles - 10k early!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I noticed the service 1000 miles indicator in my 2004 octy vrs just now.

Thing is, it was serviced by the previous owner at a skoda dealer (according to the service log) at 19k (january 2006), I purchased it in august 2006 at 23.7K, now on 28K.

The book states it's due at around 38K though :( .

I've checked the instrument coding on channels 43, 44 and 45 and it's definately setup for variable servicing.

Also got a fault code when scanning with vag-com:

01336 - Data Bus for Comfort System

80-10 - Single-Wire Operation - Intermittent

Could this have anything to do with it, and does anyone know what could have caused the fault? (I have an aftermarket head unit and cd changer, red and yellow leads crossed, ariel output wire isolated from loom etc. - I scan regularly and this wasn't there a week ago)

Now I know the variable servicing will be affected by driving style but I don't think I'm that hard on it - I use the power and sometimes go to the red but mostly not, just don't need to with this car!!!)

Sorry to have started a new thread - I have searched on both service and the fault but didn't get much joy in the results  .

:bump:

Anyone????? :weeping:

Not seen the code myself Matt.

Variable servicing isn't all about thrashing it. It's goverened by driving conditions and oil monitoring. Lots of short journey's can have the effect.

Stu,

There is a fault logged in modules 17 & 19 about the radio coms:

Address 17 -------------------------------------------------------

Controller: 1U0 920 911 C

Component: KOMBI+WEGFAHRSP VDO V10

Coding: 19412

Shop #: ******

TMBER41U348740699 SKZ7Z0C2259569

2 Faults Found:

01336 - Data Bus for Comfort System

80-10 - Single-Wire Operation - Intermittent

01304 - Radio

49-00 - No Communications

Address 19 -------------------------------------------------------

Controller: 6N0 909 901

Component: Gateway K<->CAN 0001

Coding: 00006

Shop #: *******

2 Faults Found:

01336 - Data Bus for Comfort System

80-10 - Single-Wire Operation - Intermittent

01304 - Radio

49-00 - No Communications

This code has been present since I replaced the radio (in august) but not the data bus one.

I have had the head unit out a few times recently so is it possible I've just disturbed a connection causing the fault to be logged and in reality there's nothing wrong?

Obviosuly I will have to contact the dealer about the service sometime this coming week (great timing before xmas  ) so I don't know if I should clear the code or let them see it - or do you think I should clear it and see if it returns?

I don't expect the car will go in till after new year anyway as the mileage will be about right by then.

Edit, I also found that thread when I searched Stu, I was more converned with what would cause it than only have one data line working - could be a problem if the other one failed!!!!

Perhaps Uwe or Sebastian can shed some more light on it if they come across this. If you have a registered cable you can email them and ask.

When you fitted your aftermarket stereo did you disconnect the appropriate wire from the ISO connector that the oem stereo used to communicate with the ecu, if you left it connected it could explain the error code as the data bus could be getting 12v from the HU confusing the whole ecu.

Hi Mannyo,

I believe there are only the required pins connected for +12v, ignition 12v, ground (obviously!), lights illumination and the speakers.

I deliberately isolated the automatic ariel signal from the car side of the loom as it had 12v on it and I thought it was something to do with the comms.

On the head unit side the amp remote goes to the amp and the ariel power goes to the booster directly.

I used the guide from this site here http://www.briskoda.net/forums/ice-security-insurance/ice-iso-connections/47926/?highlight=iso+plug to check what connections did what and only connected the one's I needed. (I made up my own loom for the sony side to the ISO connectors using a generic plug from halfords as the old one was a bit messy!)

I had the fault codes cleared earlier so I will scan the car again in a few days time to see if this one returns, and if so I will ask the dealer to investigate when it's serviced.

P.S Stu,

I haven't got my own license for vag yet (a friend has so he can do things for me when needed) but I am seriously considering getting one, just not sure whether to spend

I suffered from servicing every 9k miles in my PD 130. After a lot of messing about got it sorted - at 46k  - car said it was on variable servicing BUT it wasn't getting a signal from the sump sensor (I think), so it was reverting to the lowest interval for variable - ie 9k miles. Required a new dash panel insert to sort it out. Not sure what the ATM checked or if it is possible to check with Vag-com. None of the dealer techs new what to look for.

Oh JOY  . Here's hoping it's not that, although I still have till next august/september so will probably just about have covered that mileage by then...........

A neighbour of mine has problems with his Passat 1.8T indicating the need for a service every 10,000 miles although it is set for variable service intervals. We discovered that a faulty oil sensor or signal could cause this problem - as bigad mentions above.

Think I'll try and tactfully mention the dodgy sensor idea to the dealer when I get it booked in for the service and point out I'm less than happy with the unexpected early service! (Unless of course they read it on here first  )

I'll also mention the data bus error if the fault gets logged again before it goes in - better to give them some grief about it while I still have warranty eh?!!

The dealer may not know what to look for - needed an Area Tech Manager to work it out on mine. I was told repeatedly that it was the way I drove :thumbdwn:

Ask them to check the actual signal - mine showed nothing. The sensor was fine, it needed a new dash panel

Quick update - don't think my dealer is the sort to listen to customer suggestion either - flatly debunked this suggestion and refused to accept that it's a bit early to be needing a service.

I've decided to go to fixed servicing now as the cost will be cheaper, it'll need another service in 10k anyway and I don't believe I'll get much more than 10k per service even on variable anyway with the journeys and driving I do.

Plus I never did like the idea of irregular service intervals!

Also the error code mentioned in the initial post has so far not returned so fingers crossed I just disturbed a connector while messing around putting the head unit back in.

Ok, now the car is booked in next week to be serviced and the "service miles" have counted down from 1000 in 100 mile increments it now flashes "service" on the mileage side of the display for a few seconds then goes away.

I keep reading about a spanner indicator or "service light" but this is all I've got - should there be any other indication as with the dark mornings and evenings when I go to and from work it would've been easy to miss if I wasn't looking out for it  .

Anyone?

No, the brief "service" flash is all you get. I missed the entire countdown from 1000 this time round!

ok, thanks Zooty!

That's a bit crap then isn't it?!

wonder why people always refer to the "service light" or spanner then

You could try a VW independant. As long as the garage is VAT registered, I 'believe' that technically this should not affect the warranty, and I have had some quotes in this area at around
