Which sat nav

Featured Replies

I am looking at possibly fitting sat nav in my Superb. I think I need the MFD unit but which version exactly? there are a couple on ebay that certainly look like the right ones although there is mention of a D version and a G version or something. Which do I need and what other ancilliaries do I need to go with it to get a full up and running system. Also, do you lose the maxidot display for the radio or is there a way round that? I understand the old sat nav is actually not that great but they seem to be so cheap now and look so much better than a 1 din radio and a drawer!

Baker21 is the man, who has done this retro fit, I'm sure he will be along shortly to assist you with all you need to know.

The unit you need to source for the Skoda is the DX unit and not the MFD, the MFD is the VW unit and it will illuminate Blue and Red, the DX unit obviously illuminate's green.

I looked into the versions D and G and when I had my Bora I sourced a G version MFD and had no problems with it, if you look into the Sat Navs then people suggest a better AMP on the G version but I only believe it's the postcode search that differ's....anyway on the DX I did not find any different versions.

Installation is simple and after you have removed your current Head unit and drawer it's obvious where and how the DX unit fits in. You will be supplied with an antenna that you can position where you like but as it's magnetic I positioned mine onto the beam behind the glove box and I can pick satalites up no problem.

You will however loose your steering wheel controls, only volume and chanel changing stations and the top half of your multi dot display, now this sounds like a bummer but as I never had this in the Bora it made little difference to me, at the end of the day I have an OEM Sat Nav in the car that looks perfect and better than a single DIN head unit and drawer that I never used.

All in I paid

Thanks for the info mate, it really is appreciated. It's a shame about losing the steering wheel controls, I use them a lot although I never take notice of the maxidot really. I assume you just lose the very top section of the maxidot - the bit that is blank when the radio is off, is that right? So I need the gps antenna (if that is the correct term) and I am assuming some kind of map disc. Did Skoda ever do a 2din radio/cd that retains the steering wheel controls?

They are all MFD's be it VW, Skoda, SEAT or Ford. The DX refers to the mapping.

As VRStu has posted you will find a lot of information on VWNavi but I can tell you that you will only loose the top half od your multi dot display - the bit that tells you the Radio station, CD or track number, etc.

You can ofcourse get the OEM Sat Nav to work with the steering wheel controls and multi dot display but then you have to have all the OEM wiring and this is why Skoda charge so much for the Sat Nav unit from new. There are a lot of Can-Bus and interfaces that need to be made for the Sat Nav to talk to the Multi-dot and the steering wheel controls. I have not read anywhere about someone who has done this and at what cost, I have looked into it but it would involve a larger expense and a lot more parts out of the dashboard being removed / re-fitted and I just didn't think it was worth it IMO.

Most seller's on Ebay for example will sell you the GPS Antenna, Map Data CD and wiring loom with the Sat Nav units as without these it won't work.

I have read an article on this Baker21, I don't have the link any more but if it crops up again I'll send it over.

If you find anything then please let me know and I will have a look into the costs.

Cheers mate!!
