windscreen anti-rain drop stuff

Featured Replies

Sorry, don't know if this is the right forum for this post

I'm wondering about sourcing some of that stuff you rub on your windscreen which just makes rain bead up and fly off your windscreen at speed.

Jon (taviars) mentioned he had tried a new one during the meet up in N. Wales and it was v. good.

Are these worth investing in? I would have thought that they're more trouble than they're worth because the effect wears off after some time, forcing you to have wiper smear of something?

What are they like?

i would be interested in peoples opinion of them as well at the moment i am using autoglym glass polish which is rather good but i am running out.

i think the stuff is called rainex, i have some for my car but have not used it yet.

I believe it is called rainex too, and I believe I'll have change when I buy a tub from Halfords using the

tfboy,

I have use the Rain X its actually pretty good. I put it on two weeks ago and its still seems okay. The rain drop just bead up and off. Its not as brilliant as they claim but worth it. I'd put it on your windscreen and front door windows and don't forget the mirrors. It does seem to smear a bit when you use your wipers but as soon as you stop using them the smear disappears (does that make any sense). Apparently the screen wash reservoir RainX is a load of rubbish so try it if u want but the stuff u wipe on the windows is worth a try.

I hope that helps

Aaquil.

Halfords do it...comes in a bright pink plastic thing which looks like a d**do.

I've heard good things about it, and if I had the patience to clean my windscreen and dry it then apply it then I'd try it, as I find the wipers don't do a whole lot over 100 (km/h)...

Rob.

I might give it a go then, as you say rob the wipers are c**p over 100 (Km/h) ;)

Used both Rainex and the one in the pink d**do looking like bottle......both work well upto a point.

Rain will bead and be pushed off at speed BUT....it does smear if you use your wipers and you do have to reapply regularly to ensure optimum performance.

The pink d**do one, I have used before. Wasn't impressed!!! Has left swirls of 'product' that can be seen when wet. I have tried every thing to remove it, but nothing will shift it....even glass abrasive cleaner didn't help. Re-applied it for a better coverage, but the original swirls still re-appear?!?!?!

Any one got any ideas how to clean it off and start again????

PS. tried most products used to clean windows...but open to suggestions

IIRC the one Jon uses is Ombrello, available here Haven't tried it myself, I just try to keep the windscreen clean, as I've used Rain-X before and it does cause awful smearing, as the wiper blades force the water into microscopic little beads. I actually think that visibility was worse - hence I don't bother now.

For those of you Swissol converts, a little Onyx wax on the side windows has a similar effect to Rain X (don't use it on the windscreen!!). The water just beads and runs off when the car gets up to speed - also make frost much easier to get off the glass.

tried isopropyl alcohol or thinners?

tried isopropyl alcohol or thinners?

Yep....ISA, thinners, white spirt...etc

One thing that did help for a very short period was some 'industrial' glass cleaner my old man uses to keep the shop showcases looking good!! But alas that soon faded away!!! :(

I use RainEx, one bottle lasts ages and is clear liquid not this Pink pooh you've quoting - is this the Halfords home brand? Sure wipers smear abit, but most of the time, intermittent setting is good enough so the wipers need not be on continuously.

Other plus point, when applied to all windows, makes the rain bead into droplets, so your windows look as waxed as your paint work - lovely!

Only when I can't get my hands on any Stella... :drunk:

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

What about 10 or 20 mol Hydrochloric acid i will be suprised if that doesnt shift it or failing that a 2nd hand windscreen?

Howard is right, I use some stuff called Ombrello. Put it on about 12,000 miles ago and its still working :D

Quite expensive,

 Jon - from what I saw on Jan 3rd...

It's given me an idea. Suffice to say I've made contact with weathertec... Sorry, Adrian, I may be trying to step on your "turf"... :D

Potential GB? Count me in

In my experience its only any good if you do the majority of your miles on the motorway - it works really well on the motorway. At slower speeds the lack of air means its less effective at 'beading up' and it causes smearing with every sweap of the wiper. It is excellent stuff for side windows and mirrors though, I would buy more just for that purpose alone.

Dave, I've found it beads at slow speeds, but needs air to clear the beads. Found the accelerating clears it, at least partially, maybe due to the change in angle and the increase in airflow. Don't need to be going fast. Did the wife's car a couple of weeks before mine, well, I had to learn how to put it on :D Mine hardly ever smears, although I've found it prefers clear water to strong washer fluid mixtures

tried rainx and same result,it works ok for a while but only clears water efficiently at 40+mph so in the town u have to use the wipers which first smear then partially remove the rainx so I've given up on it.

I think it was first used in racing,I used to use it when I was doing sprints and it worked very well then because the slow driving problems was never an issue.
