Favorit tuning. 135 -> 136 engine mod

Featured Replies

Hi there

I am brand new to this site and hoping for answers. It seems there is a lot of information in here, so here goes:

I have just bought a favorit 135 with at blown head gasket (I knew this on purchase - it was cheap). Anyway, I'm thinking of getting more power from it by milling the head, now that it has to come off anyway.

I have checked with good old Haynes, which states, that the only difference between the 135 and the 136 engine is in the compression ratio (pp 2A*2). For the 135 it's 8.8 and for the 136 it is 9.7. It also states that the difference is due to the fact that the 135 pistons have a recess in the piston crown and the 136 are flat.

Based on my calculations the difference in compression ratio amounts to 4.3 ccm pr cylinder. This equals 0.96 mm off the head.

0.96 is a lot but the difference in power is also a lot (54 vs. 68).

Is it possible to mill 0.96 mm off the head without getting in to trouble with the valves etc?

I have not been able to find any other differences between the two engines. They seem to share the same electrical system etc.

What do you think? Is it possible?

cheers

Christian

hi. when i blew the 135 in my old fav. est. i was told, point blank. it cant be skimmed!! dont know how true this is (the dealer in question later turned out to be less than honest!!!). good luck. i am told you can do alot with the engine when it does work.

Head can be skimmed for definite, possibly by that amount as I know with flat top pistons its safe to go up to 11.0:1 compression ratio. If you are wanting to go further on performance it really is worth getting a 136 engine from a favorit or felicia to go in there instead. Rather than starting from a handicapped base. The engines arent to difficult to change in these cars as the engine bay is nice and wide and everything is acessible enough.

If the cars an injection version its well worth ditching the cat theres a 10% power gain from that alone! (both from what Ive seen on back to back rolling road trials and according to manufacturers figures) Believe it or not the 1300 skodas normally pass their emissions tests without cats fitted :D.

These engines are VERY responsive to basic tuning and can make good power figures. One thing to be VERY aware off when you refit your head is to make sure you check the liner height and shim where necesarty otherwise you are very likely to have further head gasket problems.

This was possibly down to the fact that it was warped beyond what skimming could achieve like mine was on my old 136.

You can take a few thou off the head for sure. Heck, a recon head is only
