I've always thought when it came to economy and emissions, VW group's TDi engines were slightly behind those from PSA/Ford or Honda:

Octavia:

Honda Civic:

The Skoda website is showing an additional emissions and economy specification section, marked "After Wk 45". Nice to see they're not standing still

Hmmm , thats quite an improvement.

I would have thought that would require physical changes as well as different ECU programming.

Where did you find the new spec.?

Maybe they just retested the current engines. I know that my 1 yr old 2.0TDi is already a band C engine.

I thought I read that the Honda produced 251lb/ft @ 2000rpm?

That does seem too low. I would expect that torque figure from a diesel engine putting out around 100 brake, not 140.

EDIT: Just looked it up - the correct torque figure is 251@2000...

Performance wise figures are the same, your mpg maybe better and road tax may be cheaper.

How will you know if you have the new engine or not i.e. if your car was built very close to week 45?

D'oh. I blame Wisebuyers.co.uk. They seem to have fixed the 5dr spec since I checked (it now says 250lb-ft @ 2000) but the Type S spec says 128lb-ft!

Hi,

I'm not going to argue with the published figures, but one comparison of published figures by different manufacturers compared with results obtained in real driving conditions showed considerable discrepances between manufacturer's claims and actual results, but Skoda's published consumtion figures were very close to the real driving conditions results.

Unfortunately I can't recall the publication, but it was in 2006. Beware of assuming all manufacturer's claims are accurate, particularly where mpg and emissions are concerned. My Octy DSG is a VED band lower than listed - and I'm not alone in that.

Presumably power and torque are relatively easy to measure on a test bed, but are the manufactuer's figures quoted "bare engine" (on a dynamometer) or installed in the car (rolling road)?

Is it a level playing field? (e.g. are BHP and PS being treated as equivalent - I accidently typed 140 bhp for mine and of course it should be PS)

Sadly my well informed automotive enthusiast friend from IMECHE is deceased, but he used to get very cross about the way performance figures from some makers were blatantly misleading.

Is week 45 the manufacture date for the engine or the assembly of the car including the updated engines?

Under pricing on the Skoda web site, the CO2 for PD 170 TDI engine is now listed as 154 (think it was 157 before week 45).

However, if you try and get the performance and economy figures from the web site under Octavia / Specifications / Engine, it doesn't bring up any info for the vRS hatchback PD 170 TDI. :thumbdwn:

If you look for vRS estate PD 170 TDI engine it brings up some details - combined MPG is 49.6 - I'm sure it was 48.something pre-week 45

Hope Skoda fix this soon!
