Piston Ring Problem

Featured Replies

Hello

Hope someone out there can help with some info....

My father owns a Fabia Elegance 1.4, 16 valve registered in early 2000. The car has done 40k miles and is now unusable - it fails to start or shuts its engine down when being driven. The explanation given by his Skoda franchised dealer is that the piston rings are worn to the point that they fail to clear all the exhaust gas properly which builds up in the manifold where it is detected by sensors which shut the car down.

Is this a design fault which Skoda accept any responsibility for fixing or do they consider it to be normal wear and tear?

Would replacement rings be likely to give the same problem?

Any advice on what to do for the best gratefully received

Thanks

Since being on this forum, It's the first I've heard of it. I'd say it's normal wear and tear!

 @ Snoopie.

This is a very common problem, and one which Skoda are well aware of.

If you approach your friendly dealer, I think Skoda UK are still offering to put forward half the repair cost as a goodwill jesture. ;)

Good luck getting it fixed.

Yes it is common , but blame VW not Skoda , after all its a VW Engine!

I also own a 1.4 16 valve Elegance registered in 2001. It has only done 37000 miles and I have been told it needs new piston rings (was using a lot of oil), but am unable to get help towards cost from Skoda.

Anyone with any better luck from Skoda?
