Lighting issues

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Driving on the dark section of the M40, I noticed that my lights (on dim) only lit about 8 ft down the road. As I overtook other cars, I I compared how far their beams lit up and found mine to be serious lacking. Also when I adjusted the level of the beam, only the left side light moved.

What bulbs can I use to upgrade the standard 1.8T Elegance bulbs?

Is there a simple solution to the non-adjusting light level?

Thanks

I have noticed the same problem with my vrs. so I think it is c*** lighting and needs better bulbs. the only thing is recently driving my dad's TDI i remarked that does have better lighting with standard bulbs so work that one out?

think it is time to get it to the stealers to check then out

I have a TDi and I thought the standard lights were a bit naff. I know this will sound silly, but have you checked the headlamp glass is nice and clear? it does not take much at this time of year with wet muddy roads to get a lay of dirt of the glass which will obviously affect lighting performance.....

Stupid question.Do headlight bulbs dim over time before they go kaput or do they just go kaput?

I think mine are the originals so they must be over 5 yrs old now.Wondering if its worth asking the dealer to shove a new set in next service or whether it makes naff all difference

I believe that they do go over time. something to do with the gas in the bulb

dont get the stealers to put some in I reccenlty got a set of super brite one form halfords for £15.00.

oh and by the way sincine my last posting on this subject I have had the sealers realine my lights and now even with standard bulbs in are 250% better than they were

I recommend Philips VisionPlus and/or BlueVision, the upgrade is cheap and the gain is impressive !

Osram silverstars.

Lasted 2 years in the Octy and much cheaper than the phillips bulbs :)

HTH

I recommend the Phillips Rally 90/100 ones. Had them in mine, they are more than adequate :D

If somewhat less than legal for H4s :rofl:

I don't know where my dad gets mine from, but they're 90/130w and are the dogs boll*cks!!

I thought they might melt the headlamp lens at first:eek: but 3 years on and they are still just as good!!!

The standard H4 55/60w are sh!t, as were the standard 55w H7 fogs, the 55w H7's have been replace with 100w versions. The fogs are now ok..ish.

He didn't say he wanted legal, just good lights :haha:

Quite true ;)

I have no problem with 100w main beam but 90w dipped (eg when using H4) is pretty nasty to oncomming drivers IMHO.

Fog lights are not meant to be so bright as they are designed to reflect as little as possible in the fog. That's the same reason they are focused at the floor or very low down in the car. I found the 50% brighter and the 30% brighter bulbs more than adequate upgrades for the main/dipped beam and they are still road legal.

Agree with recommendation of Powerbulbs - they charged me £20 for 2 sets of 50% brighter Phillips, and 2 Philips blue-white sidelight bulbs.

Can confirm that bulbs do dim over time (and you should have seen the sidelight bulbs that came out; the glasses were black). Still, they'll do if I need to replace another numberplate bulb.

Never had a problem with originals, however I do have a problem with other peoples badly adjusted and over bright ones going the other way or following me (but not for long!). Perhaps my owl eye transplant helps.
