Remapping and Insurance

Featured Replies

When I eventually get my vRS, one of the first things I want to do is take it to Star Performance and have it remapped, along with a 160 PD air intake and a cat back Milltek. Just wondering how this would affect my insurance. Surely going from 130 to nearly 180 BHP is going to increase my premium. Would be interested to hear from some of the guys on here who have remapped and carried out performance mods to thier Furby's on how thier insurance has been affected. Thanks

Yep, I will put your insurance up and the difference will depend on which insurer.

What you will notice as the biggest issue is your choice of insurers goes down making it harder to get a decent quote. It's not a huge problem though.

Try getting some qoutes form Chris Knott and Adrian Flux.

Cheers sir. I'm currently with Adrian Flux for my Gora and they have allowed me to do basically anything to my car, with the exception of performance mods, without an increase in my policy. When I do find the right vRS will definately ask them to requote. Good to hear what insurance companies you guys are with with mapped cars too.

Get it pre-approved in writing + with increase in premium (if it applies).

This avoids nasty surprises. A lot of insurance companies will let you do allsorts as long as you don't chip/remap it. As soon as you do, the fun begins ;)

In my case I had my previous insurer, Zurich, whilst I got brakes/ARB/strutbrace/FMIC and a few other bits fitted but still without a remap. This increased my premium by about 50 quid for the remainder of the year IIRC.

I'm now with NU via my broker, and it is a fair bit more expensive :(

I suppose telling them you have fitted 312mm Audi TT brakes to help you stop quicker wont help :P

No, I told the guy over the phone i had fitted a parachute to help the car slow down, and I don't think he got the joke.

Nope - bigger brakes mean you'll be going faster/braking later therefore you're more likely to crash :D

Try Greenlight too, mthey are fairly mod freindly but come renerweal time need to be reminded that they need to be competitive!

I spoke with GreenLight (broker) and my insurance is through Highway Insurance, I can do any mods I like to my vehicle without altering my premium, the only thing I pay is £25 for the privilege of ammending my policy, so best thing to do in my case was to get all the work done at once, then insure it through Highway, I am 22, 2 years NCB, 2 Fault claims, 1 SP30 and my price is £800.00.

That's not bad actually, might have to get in touch with those guys then as I pay a(n) (un)fair amount more than that ;)

Admittedly having to insure for 40k/annual for Europe-wide cover isn't gonna help keep premiums down on a mildly fettled car like mine

thats brilliant for a fabia running 999bhp and 999lb/ft!

only running 1 BHP and 1 Lb/ft on my car mate, helps keep the premium down, it did used to have a Bugatti Veyron engine in it pushing 999 bhp and 999 lb/ft of torque though :D

I couldn't afford to insure it and got sick of been overtaken by 2.0 Ltr Fabia's all the time, so I put a lawnmower engine in it instead

thats exactly what ive told my insurance!;):D

watch yourself with highway insurance, losts of stories on the net about them being realy difficult to deal with when trying to get them to py out.

They paid out no problem with me :)

Extremely helpful too infact, admitadly it was a NO FAULT claim however they could of kicked up a fuss.

I have declared every single modification to the vehicle, inluding all faults and the dates they occured, I cannot see how they would have any issues with paying out in my case, prehaps people aren't being as honest as they should be. Not something I am willing to risk if the worst should happen such as a major RTA.

Pretty sure its Highway my insurance is with just now through Flux. I only pay around £350 at the moment for my Gora SE 1.9 TDi (110) which I think is group 6, and I'm 29 with 6 years NCB, no endorsements and no faults. I know the Fabia will probably cost more anyway to insure being group 9, but would like not to have to pay daft premium again like when I was young and trying to cover my Polo 16v.
