What am I doing wrong?

Featured Replies

Maybe you can help me. I bought this last week from Bluespot Audio,

and fitted it. I have tried and tried to get a decent sound out of it and can't. My wife thought the Symphony head unit sounded better, so I popped it back in and yep, she was right. There is so much more bass and it really does sound like a beefier punchier system than the Blaupunkt. Am I being completely stupid, or is it that I bought a stereo without any balls?

Your advice is welcome.

Cheers,

Andrew.

It must be a setting problem,

Have you turned the loudness function on, this helps bass and treble at low listening volumes.

If this HU has the DEQ function, try some different setting,

The HU should be way more powerfull than the symphony.

I had a similar problem when I fitted an Alpine unit.... It just took a bit of time to twiddle around the millions of settings. Only problem was, no sooner that I had sorted the sound out... I trashed the speakers as they just could not handle what the new HU was putting out

All sorted now though :D

That's what I thought. Normally when I've upgraded a head unit, the benefits have been instant. With this one I have tried to get a decent sound, but it really is noticeably worse, especially when on the move and all you can hear is the treble and no bass. Thanks for the advice so far and keep it coming.

You may be able to alter the HU cross over settings...

(sorry just guessing!)

Sorry to sound daft, but what are they and how can I do this?

I'm not 100% about this... (experts please step in!!)

On my Alpine HU you can alter the HI / MID / Low Cross over frequencies.... you should be able to trim the bass to suit the speakers. I gave up in the end and changed the speakers for a set of Pioneers that cost £35 and are MUCH MUCH better.

I'll have a dig around in the destructions for the HU to see what the explanation is of the cross over settings.

Make sure you have the +ve and -ve speaker connections the right way round on all speakers first of all. If you get one wrong, the bass tends to get cancelled out and it sounds terrible. Then check the HU settings.

I thought of that and checked and as far as I can see, all is well. I also changed the speakers for Pioneers a while ago and they should be well up to the job. I feel completely daft as I know in theory that when a thread like this is posted everyone who reads it thinks 'Poor bloke, doesn't have a clue.' In this case I am flummoxed as my old grandad used to say. I can't really return the head unit either as I am sure that Bluespot wouldn't accept the excuse that it sounds worse than the Symphony unit. Thanks so far and I'll look into everything you've all mentioned.

I agree it's probably just a setup problem with the equalizer and filters (if available) etc.

A while back I tried fitting an old sony minidisc/tuner I have to see if the radio reception was any better than my current cd/tuner and the sound was awful!

When I used that head unit years ago it was connected to an active crossover with 3 amps and all tweaked up to sound good but when I replaced it with the current one it had built in eq and filters and straight out the box it sounded pretty good so no need for all the other gear.

I have found that it does need tweaking a bit to sound right in the octy, mainly as I'm using the standard speakers for mid-hi and they obviously can't handle the lower frequencies at any decent volume, hence the filters are useful.
