VRS Turbo - how loud should it be?

Featured Replies

Hi, I've had my Octy VRS about 3 weeks now and have only just started to hear the turbo when driving it. The car is completely standard and still under warranty - I just wondered if the turbo should be as loud as it is. At first I could only hear it with the window open but now I can clearly hear it with the window closed too - maybe my hearing has just tuned into it. Is the noise normal or should it be almost un-noticable? It's not so much a whistle, or a dump valve noise - more of a whooshing. I haven't noticed a performance problems either - just curious/paranoid about the noise.

i think its just you getting used to it myself, they aren't really loud as stnadard but if you listen yo can hear them. don't worry about it and enjoy your car mate :)

Totally normal, if you listen really closely you'll be able to hear the diverter valve dumping the wasted air into the airbox when you change gear as well (sounds like a muffled dump valve).

I'm hard pushed to hear mine I have to say, if you think it's got more noticeable it may be worth checking boost pipes to make sure there's no leaks or splits starting?

if there was any sort of leak or split pipe you would notice the performance change and the engine management light would come on straightaway.

Dont forget too the turbo is at the back of the engine so its probably more audible. I can hear mine spooling and the chuff off air when changing gear too.

I can hear mine clearly, sounds perfectly normal to me :)

making me want to go for a drive now and listen for mine! lol

Compared to cosworths that i'm used to, mine makes no discernable noise at all :)

Things has moved on since the days of the good ol Cosworths mate.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest - think I'll go give it a good caining shortly!

There you go again Rich, rubbing it in "I've still got my Cossy n you haven't", mind I must agree the octy Vrs does'nt come anywhere near the sound of a YB spooling up, then the thump as it comes on boost proper and the "whooosht" of a cold side mounted dump valve. By the way mine was flint grey and on a G plate, but didn't have the headlamp conversion, are you a member of the RS owners club? if so do go to the Bristol RSOC meets cos we may have met in the past.

 yes Andy I've been to Bristol occasionally, not very regularly though just when it suited, when they were at the rugby club at Almondsbury. I've still got it but it's been in the garage since July :( , been out there working the last couple of days though, need to get it out again :D
