more power doesn't always mean more torque. bhp is just a calculation of torque x rpm so if you make your torque higher in the rev range then you will make the same torque but higher bhp

something round there. Its not the kind of torque I really want to have in the end. As you mentioned above a bit, I'd sooner have the bigger HP and limit the torque to around the 400 mark. At least then I know its within the tolerances of the clutch.

And they've been racing diesels for quite some time now, is that right?

I understand that diesels have bhp rated at a "smoke limit" - the point at which there is smoking - what's the smoke status of the 430lbft monster?
