Problem with electrics-suprise?

Featured Replies

I bought my car froma dealer so i have some warranty on it, but i want to know what is wrong with the car myself.

I've had it for a week now and so far found these problems from day 1:

  • The front driver window will only go up on the one touch. it wont go up a little when you half press the button
  • The front passenger window is intermittant from the drivers control. It wont always go down when i want it to
  • The starter motor doesnt disengage fully after the car fires, so just after ignition you hear a loud whiring noise
  • When driving at night i noticed that the lights flicker. not just the headlights, but all the lights and my radio in the car. Each flas is accompanied by a charge/discharge noise, which is very strange and disturbing.

Any ideas?

The car is a 1.4 16v fabia elegance. X reg.

On my X reg Fabia TDI, the front window electrics would occasionally swap over, or not work on one-touch mode. The cure was simply to switch ignition off then on and work the buttons, holding them down (/up) for a few seconds after the window has reached the end of its travel. The problem is actually that the motor doesn't know when to stop, and has to be re-taught.

Not sure about the a starter motor, but I once had a Triumph where there was so much clutch dust on the starter motor shaft that it wouldn't extend/retract properly. Maybe just needs cleaning.

Flickering lights may be associated with a problem with the power steering on older cars. Do a search to get the details.

I've found Fabia electrics to be as good as any other car's, so yes, I am surprised at your problems.

Ive done some looking up on older threads, and from what i taking the lights may be a malfunction with the PAS sensor. Ive had the car for a week and ive also hads the PAS warning light come on once, even though i didnt feel; a difference in the steering. I turned the ignition off and back on and it dissapeared.

I think the whiring noise of the starter motor can mean its got a dry shaft as said on a thread from here.

Personally i'm not gonna touch the car. The garage can do that. I have enough playin around with bikes to bother with a car. (plus it isnt like working on my metro!)

All your problems sound like simple stuff. Nothing serious, they are probably why the previous keeper sold it.

If the PAS light came on then it almost defo the position sensor on the steering rack.

The starter will need changing, cleaning is a waste of time these days

The windows sound like they need teaching where the upper and lower positions are again. There is a section in the handbook that tells you what to do. It's probably happened because the battery will have been disconnected at the dealers.

Oil consumption issues fairly common and covered on here.
