Crud in coolant tank causing warning light, looking for bodge for this week

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm looking for a short term bodge to try to clean up some of the crud out of the coolant reservoir in my car, mainly as it is causing the low fluid light to come on.

I know why the crud is in there, but I'd like to remove it.

Would take it back but I can't do it as I have to be in the office Monday, and then I'm on site in Cambridge Tue-Thu, back in office Fri, and at APS on Sat (where they will check the car over & sort it properly anyway).

I'm quite tempted to bring along my old bottle, some ready-mixed coolant, some tools etc, and see if the local skoda dealer in Cambridge area would be able to help me with another bottle :)

Problem now is that I can't tell if the real problem has gone away or whether there is a genuine problem, and for obvious reasons I really don't want to push my luck too much ;)

Thanks :)

The oil will cause no issue at all with the actual running of the car. If you just want the light be off there is a real simple way to sort it. Unplug the sensor place a suitable paper clip between the two terminals and wrap a bit of insulating tape around it. Just keep an eye on the level (which im sure will be fine anyhow).

Yeah level looked spot on from what I can tell (it is a little hard to tell now due to the amount of oily stuff in the reservoir/against the insides of it).

Totally agree though, no problem with the running & the engine is definitely running smoother too

if you've got some spare coolant , i would drain some coolant and remove the bottle ,if you can block off the 2 pipes outlets ,then tip a squirt of fairy liquid or liquid soap into the bottle , then some hot water , put the cap on and shake like anything , this should remove the oil from inside

this sort of method is used at work to flush out the cooling systems on the Transits after the oil cooler has gone

is your oil to water oil cooler ok ?

Hya - thanks for that, might just go for that option as it's pretty easy to do :)

The reason there is some oily stuff in there is because of a little spillage that happened whilst the block (head) was re-assembled. This was also mentioned to me so it doesn't worry me, and it will be flushed properly next week.

Will try to make sure I bring enough of the tools with me, got a mini-bottle of washing up liquid still from my travels to the US which I can use

So how's the car running WW after all the work? I know you're awaiting a remap but it must feel good to drive it again?

Cheers Mate

I had a sensor fault on mine which caused the warning light to come on. Needed the whole bottle replacing, shame you can't just remove the sensor.

If the sensor's contaminated then you might get the same problem even with a cleaned bottle (unless you manage to exchange the lot of course).

Will ask the guys to order a new bottle, I swapped one out myself only a few months ago and it is a very quick job :)
