Who has had a new steering rack?

Featured Replies

Mine is going in on Tuesday next. Symptoms are grating when turning to the left slowly with the steering locked. My RS is 4 months old with 4000 miles on it.

This was a known issue sometime ago and lots have been replaced across the range. I am in a similar position at the moment I can hear a noise every now and then but not enough to make me want to get it changed.

I was under the impression that all of the iffy ones would have been disposed of.

My car is of similar age and miles to yours.

Just checked and all cars from January should have the revised rack.

Seems to be an ongoing VAG issue. My 04 RS had a steering rack replaced under warranty.

MK2 vRS?

i see evo mag had to have a front arm on their vrs fixed as it had become loose, i think they said the car felt wobbly at speed.

I suspect my car sat in a dealers for awhile during 06. I reckon 8 months at least! Don't know why it didnt sell but they discounted it to such a degree that I had to buy it!

The original PDI was done in Jan 06 and I bought and registered it in Sep06 when the PDI was redone. They used tippex to overwrite it. Needless to say I changed the oil at just over 2000 miles to ensure that all was well.

I reckon its one of the first ones to be built hence the issue. If I give you a chassis number Stu can you find out the build date?

Thanks,

Trevor

You can normally find out yourself.

The car will have many lables on it on bits of trim etc most have a date pretty close to the build date.

I do have a list of some here if you want me to look.

mine has an annoying squeak when turning right and then back left - doesn't happen all the time but most of the time - came on over the xmas period c 4500miles - its going to be looked at when it goes into the dealers on thursday along with a couple of other things

MK2 vRS?

Mk1 - Mk2's weren't around til 05.

I had mine done a few weeks ago. All creaking noises have disappered.

However, I now have a slightly "boomy" exhaust note and vibration from 3000rpm on.... :-(

@Damian, maybe they loosened something doing the rack. From what I can see they have to drop the subframe to get at it which may disturb the exhaust.
