Water dripping out of boot lock

Featured Replies

Hi

I have just bought a 2000 x reg Octavia 1.6. When I open the hatchback I get a load of water literally running out of the boot lock. There is quite a lot of water dripping off the edge of the metalwork, I guess this is water from the rear window running down and off the back (and dripping into the boot) but where is the water coming from that runs out of the actual lock ? Its almost as if the tailgate is filling up with water ???

Is there a fix for this ? I Have searched the forums and seen posts about wiping the rear window and opening the boot a bit while waiting for the water to run off.

Its just a bit worrying to see water running out of the actual lock mechanism !

Any ideas.

Thanks

is you rear washjet working ok

Yup. sounds like the pipe to the washer jet has come off, not that unusual.

If its like my 2000 Octavia, there's no rear wash/wipe. What I found when I had the same problem is that the external handle, being fixed at either side, allows water ingress in the middle. This works its way into the cavity inside the pressing of the boot lid. When you open the boot, it pours *some* of the water on your head.

To remedy, I removed the handle, cleaned up the surfaces and put a THIN bead of silicon along the handle. Allow it to mostly cure and then fix it back in place (making sure you don't allow it to move around, as you'll get silicon on your paint). The silicon bead should take up the space in the gap. (If you do get silicon squeezing out of the gap, leave it to cure fully then carefully remove it with maybe something like an ice scraper - sharp enough but won't scrape the paint.

Since then - no leaks for me (touch wood).

Hi thanks for the replies.

Like Dilbert says, there is no rear wash/wipe on my car so it may well be getting around the handle, I had not thought of water getting in there. I will take it off over the weekend (if it ever stops raining ) and have a look. Might spray a bit of waxoil inside the box sections as well to slow the old tin worm.

Cheers

 Mine was leaking around the handle, so you have to remove the trim inside and remove some nuts I think and pull out the handle with the numberplate lights attached and the seal is a small rubber band around the edge which after cleaning I topped up with some silicon and refitted.

Hi sparky2

Yes thats what I have discovered. Removed interior trim and 4 screws holding the outside trim and numberplate lights, the rubber band type thing had perrished &split allowing water through and to drip inside the tailgate. Siliconed in place and its not allowing water in now :-)
