VRS TDi problems

Featured Replies

Good afternoon all,

I have looked on the site for mention of problems with Octavia VRS TDi-am I the only one suffering from EML and Glow plug lights coming on??????

Tomorrow will be the 10th visit to the dealer, either for resets or parts to be fitted-HELP!!!!:(

Welcome to Briskoda and sorry to hear your problems. I am moving this thread to the New Octavia forum where you should be more likely to get responses from other vRS TDi owners.

Hi Liftruckman -

You are not alone, i am displeased to say!!

Had my Vrs TD for less than 2 months and have had the Diesel Particle Filter on twice.

First time i managed to extinguish the light after a few more miles and now for the second time it has so far refused to extinguish.:thumbdwn:

I was told by the dealer mechanic to drive on the motorway at 50mph for 10 minutes without changing gear or speed and that this would extinguish (clour-our the particle filter) which it did not do. Light has now been on for past 60 miles or so. (total mileage so far = 1,750 from new)

What remedies have you taken and does your dealer suggest as mine did, that they would only extinguish the light a maximum of 4x times before they would then have to charge for every time it came in to be done??

PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR OUTCOME/S............

Cheers - John.

I had the same problem, had only done 400 miles when noticed the eml light had come on. Rang the dealers they said was safe to drive and to take it in the following day. The diagnostic check said that the glow plug relay was at fault. Job took an hour and a half to do, they said was lucky that they had a relay in stock!Been to dealers today and noticed they had another one in with the same problem so your not on your own!

My Vrs has had a Glow plug relay fitted (after waiting 4 weeks for the parts) and since then has been back for the earths to be cleaned (?)-I was told by the dealer that they had removed the n/s headlamp and cleaned and remade the earth, and also removed the wiper motor and done the same (!?)

The current problem is with the height sensor/current charge pressure sensor, which puts the EML on and makes the glow plug warning lamp flash-if you have Maxi-dot the display reads 'Engine fault-emissions workshop'

So far (5025 miles) my car has been off the road for 10 days,as I refused to use it with the EML on.

I have a friend who is Service Manager at the local VW dealer, who explained that the EML is the warning light for 12 checks that the vehicle carries out on start-up (confirmed by the suppying dealer) these checks include (believe it or not) the brake lights and/or the switch!!!!

So if your EML comes on it could be one of a dozen things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I asked my friend about the particulate filter,to be told if the light comes on-give it a good thrashing!

It should explain in the manual how to deal with the DPF warnings. Something like drive for 10 mins at minimun 60kph - but don't quote me.

It's all to do with getting the correct amount of heat into the Cat/DPF to burn off the particulate.

The PD170 in the Golf GT has had a few issues with the exhaust temp sensors, not sure if they effect the Skoda though.

Hmmm.....I've just ordered one :o

Good job it's owned by the lease company :D

Steve

I wouldnt worr about it. Most new models with new engines go though some kind of teething troubles.

When i picked mine up at the start of November i hadn't even moved my car off the forecourt and the engine light was glowing away so i had a word with one of the Directors of the garage about it and he was a bit embarrassed about the situation so after explaining that it was a known issue with the Glow Plug Relay and telling me the car was fine to drive he got on the phone to someone in Germany to sort out the new part, this had been on back order for a while as there own demonstator had had the same fault for 2000 odd miles and was a known issue, anyway my car got booked in and the new part was fitted in 30 minutes and i've done another 4500 miles since then without the light coming back on.

The particulate filter remains one of my worries over the longer term but i think a good thrashing cleans it out, so we'll see.

The car is loosening up nicely now and i'm really pleased with it, it's doing a regulation 46/47 mpg on my motorway journeys but if you are doing smaller journeys it can struggle to break the 40mpg mark, but that goes for most motors doesn't it.

I test drove a vRS TDI earlier in the week, it had been with the dealer for 3 days and the EML was ON. Salesman explained that the mechanics had misssed 'resetting it' as part of the PDI - really!!

At least if it is happening enough the dealer network will know what to do about it.

As for the particulate filter; yeah, just give it a good burn now and then OR has anyone thought of taking the particulate filter OUT of the exhaust, rewiring the sensor to neutralise it and carry on driving as we all used to in pre Euro IV days; black smoke an' all?

They need to put in a "please thrash your car now" light... :)

 Now I have an excuse the next time the police pull me, can say "sorry officer, just cleaning my diesel partical filter"

Is there anybody who hasn't had the light come on? Mine first came on at 400 miles as I pulled onto the drive following a 120 mile motorway trip.

At last - my 'PARTICULATE' filter light extinguished all by itself today - although it was some 100+ miles ago since it came on!

I did try the steady speed on the motorway (using cruise) which didn't get rid of the damn thing and whilst driving locally today, i noticed it had vanished - ;)

Got to be something that Skoda will need to do soon - must be hundreds of repetitive calls to service departments about this problem.

I know if i was a service engineer, i'd rather there was a permanent fix, than Mr. Bloggs keep on moaning about this situation - Anyone know if it's the same in the other manufacturer's with this same engine, or is it the Skoda filter box itself. Just a thought, it may even be the fact that the sensors are too 'HORNY' !! :blackkey:

(Could we ask the moderators to make this is STICKY' subject for a while please??)

My mate, the Service Manager at the local VW dealer, tells me that they have several 'steadily' driven Golf GT170's that continually have DPF lights on.........

I think you just need to drive as Skoda intended.........

I don't know whether the news is already spread in GB. But the main problem with the CEL is not the glowplugs. It is the computerbox that is responsible for the glowtime interval. (don't know what it is called in english)

Here in Germany it should be known by the dealers, as it is on skodaweb online (dealers web).

The computerbox is in backorder, I am also waiting for mine to be replaced.

You can still drive the car, as no functions are limited (and nothing will break and the engine will start no matter what temperature).

Okay, help and suggestions please - 2nd problem just occurred today...............

Went visiting some friends today who were most impressed with my car and i opened the bonnet to show the engine off - only to find that the oil dip-stick had risen by about half an inch and there was quite a bit of oil spattering around the plastic cover and some on the the bonnet sound-proofing!!

Whilst i have at least checked my oil on occasions, i always remember to fit the stick back into it's holder properly.

Is there any reason/s or cause as to why this has happened??

BAFFLED ME.

John

Erm i guess that it is the easiest thing to blow up and off if the oil pressure is too high.

You might want to make sure that the oil level isn't too high, stick it back in and see if it happens again. If it does I'd be straight up the dealer.

Well it could indicate way too much oil or you've got a poorly fitting dipstick or despite your certainty, that it wasn't put back properly.

Assuming diesel and petrol engines are the same in this respect, more seriously I guess it could indicate you have excess pressure in sump/crankcase - serious engine wear, blocked breather pipes (or incorrectly fitted 1-way valves?), perhaps even a partially blocked exhaust?

Cheers for the replies - I have cleaned the area of the small amount of oil that was spattered and obviously checked the oil depth (seemed a 'little' on the high side of the stick) Have secured the stick into it's mount and am watching it perilously each day for signs of movement upwards again!

I will most definitely get it into the dealers straight away, should this occur again.

Currently @ 1,800 miles since new.

Thx - John

Small update for the record:

Had my PDF light on again for the past 80 miles and again it extinguished by itself today, without having to either have it reset by the dealer nor did the vehicle go into the 'limp home mode'

Car has now covered - 2,110 miles.

Hope this is of some help to others.........

John.

PS - This is now the 3rd time i have had the PDF light on!

Hi all,

Picked up my vRS 2.0PD 3 weeks ago. Not a sign of any problems, with lights coming on, on the dashboard. So fingers crossed. Find the car enjoyable to drive as I am mostly doing motorway driving.

As for the MPG, I am currently averaging about 47mpg, combined.

What a joke, I would have told the dealer there and then, that in no uncertain terms, they would fix the car every time the light came on, wether they liked it or not, whilst it's under warranty.

And if the problem had not had a permanent fix by the time the warranty ended they would either be continuing to repair the re-occuring problem for free for as long as I owned the vehicle, or replacing the vehicle for one without a fault.

This is something that Skoda (and VAG it seems) need to sort out, it's unacceptable that new cars should be having these kind of faults.

I have to agree totally with John here. The idea that they would put a sticking plaster over a known fault a limited number of times is effing outrageous.

(Maybe that's the solution - tape over / remove bulb...?)

Although my experiences with Skoda and their handling of my issues have been positive, some of that carp I hear about on this forum makes them far less of a player come next car change. They were a shoo in going MK1 to MK2 vRS, but seemingly ever decreasing quality of service / number of dealers tarnishes the badge.
