Favorit clutch replacement?

Featured Replies

The clutch is slipping badly on my '95/N Favorit.

Has anyone changed one before?

How difficult a job is it?

Anything I should be aware of before starting the job?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The skodas, not the worst of cars to change the clutch on, best done from underneath by dropping the gearbox out (its heavy) its not a complex job but its not one I enjoy mainly due to the hefting the gearbox in and out safely, can help to have an assistant at times.

To be honest, although I've never done one, the amount of space around everything in the engine bay of a Favorit, and the sheer simpleness of everything on these cars, I wouldn't hesitate to suggest that it would be one of the easiest clutches of any car to change. :)

Could you not use a trolly jack to lower the gearbox down rather than lifting it?

yes you can use a jack but they areny well balanced items and have a habit of rolling off :D its not lifting the gearbox out as controlling the weigh as you drop it out. I use a jack to support it whilst undoing the bolts but tend to do the final lower and moving out of the way by hand.

There are some cars you can change clutch without removing gearbox or engine, they are the easiest ones to do :D. but for a conventional design yes the favorit is right up there. and all gearboxes are heavy :D.

Thanks for the info :D

I just have to drive it nicely until we can find the time to do it !

By changing the clutch of your Favorit you will save fuel consumption. If you can not change it immediatly, lower the moving point of the clutch and rive nicely. Do not leave the clutch pedal suddenly. Otherwise you may be stranded.

Fuel consumption has gone down noticeably over the last few weeks. We put it down to the head gasket possibly being on the way out (which it may still be).

I always drive nicely ! :P

When you do start the gearbox removal DON'T FORGET TO REMOVE THE SPEED SENSOR FIRST ! If not then you will damage the end in inside the bell housing.Just finnished my clutch job, worst bit was trying to re-line the box back on the splines on the clutch plate,it's a pig on your back !

Cheers for the tip. Will certainly remember that. Glad you got yours sorted.

Just out of interest, how long did it take you?

It can be done in a day on your own but my car had never been apart (only just done 55k on an N-plate) so i had joy in un-seizing bolts and stuff ! I spread it over the weekend and did a few other bits such as replace bottom ball joints on the wishbones and for some sick reason also felt the urge to clean the engine bay where the box was ! One other thing, the gear linkage at the gearbox end is attached by a roll pin, that will need to come out to remove the linkage (you can leave it fitted but it is a pig to move the box back in with it fitted).Give us a shout if you need any more help.

Do you recommend fitting a complete clutch kit or trying to get away with just changing the friction plate ???

It's false economy to change part of the kit while you have it so far apart. For what it cost's for the kit, replace the lot.If you have no joy from a dealer on cost try JHM Butt in Doncaster or even Partco.

takes me 25 mins to rip out box on one of them but then again i have done millions of them and i have ramp and air tools !
