A Buchan man who drove his diesel-powered Skoda at 127mph was ordered off the road for a year and fined £600 at Forfar Sheriff Court, yesterday.

Mark Thorpe, 34, admitted hitting the speed on the A90 Dundee to Aberdeen dual carriageway, near Gateside, a 70mph zone, on June 28.

Fiscal depute Donna Brown said he was spotted by police breaking the limit and a check carried out. She said the offence happened around 5pm, when traffic flow was heavy.

Gail Goodfellow, defending, said her client was detected speeding in his 1.9 litre Skoda Fabia while overtaking. "He was stopped and co-operated with police," she explained.

Sheriff Kevin Veal told Thorpe, of High Street, Peterhead: "It is a very high speed."
