!! Garage Spilt Oil On Engine !!

Featured Replies

Took my car in for a quick oil change today.

I provided Castrol GTX and a standard oil filter ...

Basically the guy doing the oil change spilt some oil around the mouth and it now has ooil stains -

I m not particularly fussy but I know that when reslling the car the first thing people look at is for oil leaks and they do this by looking if there are any oil stains -

How do these come off - Its affected the actual engine block as well as the Starter motor both of which have oil stainage.

cheers

Can the garage not clean it for you?

I didnt notice till I got home

Besides I think it is a little petty to ask them?

What do you think?

Get em to steam clean it off quickly

What happens if it doesnt get steam cleaned ?

Will the stain remain there ?

Also is it normal for an oil change to be carried without any spilling of oil elsewhere on the engine?

The problem is that garages are a law onto themselvs...

I need to keep him onside in case I need any mechanical work in the future - Just a bit upst that he spilt a bit not much in a few places over the engine and that it is noticeable and that it will probably affect the resll value...

Depends how careful the mechanic is - I've never had the car back from a service with oil spilt on the engine so either pour it slowly and carefully or clean up after themselves!

The mot amount of damage is actually where the oil filter was removed -

It looks like it sprayed itself when it was removed.

Any way - Bottom line is - How do I clean it myself?

Steam clean is a possibility but I have heard it can damage the engine?

Take it back to them.

Say very nicely and calmy that you did a service for me which was very good etc but there seems to be an ammount of oil spilt, would you be so kind to clean it up for me.

It wont take a few mins and with the propper equipment it wil be spotless afterwards.

If there's a problem with the far better option above - some handcleaner like gojo WITHOUT pumice and some kitchen towels will liberate said oil.

Oil on the engine wont cause any damage, only cosmetic issues.

The camshaft cover gasket went on my old mondeo, and the whole engine bay got covered in oil. Car was still fine after another 20K miles.

you can just steam clean the engine off yourself without any problems , just try not to spray on the brake fluid reservoir, or any exposed electrical parts , especially after your recent troubles
