Steering alignment

Featured Replies

My 55 1.9 superb had a slight prob with the steering alignment when it was about 8 months old. The wheel tended to turned slightly to the left when going straight (not to do with camber of road)

The alignment of this 4 link Passat suspension is tricky - to do it properly you have to set the height of the track rod ends as well as their lengths. If your dealer got it right the last time, go back there.

never had tracking done on a car yet,

I really find that hard to beleive! I had new alloys fitted a few months ago, and I've seen the near side wheel starting to rub. Had it tracked today, and it was 6mm out. Suprised me, but its certainly worth having a car checked every 18 months atleast. Pot holes in UK roads are very poor, and can knock the tracking out very easily

Thays my point exactly! you had a problem so you had it looked at after your new tyres, if his tracking was still fine there should have been no reason to look at it and he wouldnt have known there was a problem after the tyre fit until a few days of driving.

All i was trying to say is if his tracking felt good before the new tyres there was no reason to pay to get done again unless it starts to feel like its gone out of alignment, Its an expensive thing to pay for for no reason!

The tracking was only out a tiny bit - the fundamental prob is that the steering wheel was not put on dead straight at manufacture. The waranty only covers wheel alignment for a few months I believe (less than 6 im sure) I believe it is a manufactureing fault, not a prob of allignment. It was like it from new. Basically, tracking is fine, but steering wheel is off to the left all the time as not on straight. Cost £80 to have this adjusted out at dealer last time - who admitted it had a manufacturing fault. What should I do?

Hi Chris, did you have the car from new?, if so was the steering wheel of centre then.

This would be very unusual as this is one of the things you would look out for when buying a second hand car as a sign that there was some repairs done which necessitated the removal of the steering wheel.

It was 7 months old when I got it. Didnt notice it until I had it for a few weeks - is nothing major. The skoda engineer says it is a manufacturing fault. Said the wheel can be adjusted in notches, but if adjusts one notch the other way it would be out of alignment the other way as each notch is bigger than the misalignment at the moment - if you follow - thats why they adjusted it out with the track rod ends (I believe thats what they called them)
